MALIBU, California – Senior middle blocker Austin Wilmot of the Pepperdine men's volleyball team earned the Sports Imports/AVCA National Player of the Week award on Tuesday, the first of his career.
Today's award comes on the heels of Wilmot receiving his second Mountain Pacific Sports Federation/Molten Defensive Player of the Week award of the season on Monday.
In a two-match split against then-#8 UCLA last week, Wilmot (Valley Village, Calif./Crespi Carmelite HS/UC Irvine) averaged a team-best 3.00 points per set while hitting .500 (17-3-28). He posted 14 blocks in nine sets, a 1.56 average.
Wilmot had a tremendous performance in Saturday's four-set win over the Bruins, hitting a career-best .550 (12-1-20) along with nine blocks, which ties for the most by any MPSF player this season. He also had three digs and a career-best two service aces.
For the season, Wilmot is averaging 1.67 kills and 1.10 blocks while hitting .383. Wilmot has led the team (or tied for the team lead) in blocks in nine of 11 matches this season.
Wilmot is a two-time MPSF Defensive Player of the Week, also receiving the award on February 22. He's the Waves' first AVCA National Player of the Week since Kaleb Denmark in April 2019.
#4 Pepperdine (8-3) has a big weekend ahead as the Waves will host second-ranked and first-place BYU (10-2) on both Friday and Saturday (March 19-20) at 1 p.m. Both matches will be shown online via WaveCasts. Due to COVID-19 protocols, spectators are not permitted.
