#8 Beach Volleyball Drops to #6 Cal Poly 3-2

MALIBU, Calif. – Though all matches finished in two sets on Sunday afternoon in Malibu, it was a tight dual between the #8 Pepperdine beach volleyball team and #6 Cal Poly. After splitting the first flight, the Mustangs won on two more courts in the second flight to defeat the Waves 3-2.

Carly Skjodt and Brook Bauer won their match on court two, while Alexis Filippone and Sutton Mactavish defeated their opponents on court three for Pepperdine's two points.

The Waves came out of the starting gate playing tough, leading on all courts. Â Cal Poly rallied on two of those, however, eventually working towards a two-set win on court four to start things off with a Mustangs point.

Carly Skjodt and Brook Bauer would get the job done on court two for the Waves to even things up, though, besting Amy Ozee and Jayelin Lombard 21-18, 21-17. Â

With the 1-1 tied score going into the second flight, the match was anyone's to take. Pepperdine would take the first edge as well, as Alexis Filippone and Sutton Mactavish dominated court three, collecting a 21-14, 24-22 win over Mariah Whalen and Tia Miric to pull ahead 2-1 overall.

The Mustangs tied things up with a two-set win on court five to put all eyes at the No. 1 slot. Though the Waves battled hard in the first set, falling in extra points 23-21, the Cal Poly one's pair made adjustments in the second to push towards a 21-10 set win to clinch the overall dual.

Next week, the Waves face off with top-ranked USC for the fourth time this season. Pepperdine will welcome the Trojans to Malibu on Sunday, March 21.
