MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine baseball team finished off its series with #9 UC Santa Barbara on Sunday, falling 12-2.
The Gauchos (6-1) got ahead early, and the Waves (1-6) tried to make a comeback, but came up short.
BIG WAVES
- Senior utility Billy Cook (Monument, Colo./Lewis Palmer HS) was the only Wave with more than one hit, as he went 2-for-4 on the day.
- Junior infielder Wyatt Young (Honolulu, Hawaii/Mid-Pacific Institute) continued his hot start, driving in one of the Waves' two runs.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Gauchos started the scoring early, getting a two-run home run in the top of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead after one. They added four runs in the second to take a 6-0 lead through two innings of play.
Neither team scored until the sixth inning, when, after a throwing error, the Gauchos got their seventh run across, taking a 7-0 lead. The Waves got their first run of the game across on an RBI groundout from
Justin Lutes. Billy Cook singled up the middle, advanced to second on a wild pitch, stole third and was eventually knocked in by Lutes' groundout. After six innings, UC Santa Barbara led 7-1.
The Gauchos scored three more runs in the seventh, taking a 10-1 lead through seven innings. They scored another run in the eighth to extend their lead to 11-1.
Pepperdine answered in the bottom when, after
Joe Caparis reached second on an error,
Wyatt Young hit a double into the right-center field gap to drive in Caparis to cut the lead to 11-2. After Cook got an infield single, a Lutes walk loaded the bases, but a groundout ended the threat.
UC Santa Barbara got back-to-back doubles to extend their lead to 12-2 in the top of the ninth.
