Baseball Readies for Saint Mary's in Opening Round of WCC Tournament

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Postseason baseball has arrived. The fourth-seeded Pepperdine Waves (21-32) are set to take on fifth-seeded Saint Mary's (30-24) in a primetime single-elimination battle.

Tommy Scavone earned First Team Pitcher All-Conference, while Casey Euper, Kai Laxa, Daniel Patterson, Lucien Wechsberg, and Joshua Woodworth were Honorable Mentions. Woodworth also made the All-Freshman Team alongside James Dell'Amico. It's the first time since 2019 that Pepperdine boasts' at least two players on the All-Freshman Team. As an overall class, seven total honorees is the most the Waves have had since 2014.

IN THE CLASSROOM
Lucien Wechsberg and Tommy Scavone made the WCC All-Academic squad, while Julian Nunez and Collin Valentine were Honorable Mention. At the conclusion of each athletic season, the West Coast Conference selects an all-academic squad for each West Coast Conference-sponsored sport. To be considered, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, while also being a significant contributor to his team and in at least their second year at their school.

Daniel Patterson leads the squad with 10 multiple-runs games (38 total runs scored).

Pepperdine is 4-1 when leading after the first inning this season.
Since April 14 (18 games), Kai Laxa has racked up nine multi-hit games, raising his season batting average from .261 to a team-leading .307. Laxa's latest multi-hit game was Sunday, May 10 against Portland, a two-hit effort.

TIME TO TALK ABOUT TREY
Outfielder Trey Dunn has been part of Pepperdine's revelation at the dish this season. His nine home runs are tied for the second-most on the squad alongside Daniel Patterson, and it also ranks in a two-way tie for the fifth-most in the WCC heading into tonight's matchup. He had a 19-game reached base streak snapped on May 9 against Portland, and it was previously tied for the second-longest on the team this season (Woodworth, 19).Â

Waves starters posted a 1.31 ERA against San Francisco a couple of weekends ago. Collin Valentine, Casey Euper, and Tommy Scavone surrendered only 3 earned runs in 20.2 innings pitched against the Dons. Euper has a 2.25 ERA in his last five starts (32.0 innings, 8 earned runs), dating back to April 2 at Gonzaga.

Lucien Wechsberg extended his career-high in saves with 10 against Portland on May 10, which is tied for the 10th-most in a single season in program history (Derek Wallace in 1990, 28 games).

Southpaw starting pitcher Casey Euper is tied with Tommy Scavone for the most wins on the team (5), while the blue and orange have won three out of his last five outings, including four of the previous seven. Prior to last Thursday's start at Santa Clara, Euper went six consecutive starts that he's gone at least a half-dozen innings. It was his sixth quality start of the year. Euper has become a strikeout machine this season, tying for the ninth-most in the league to this point (64). His 3.36 ERA ranks sixth in the conference and his .242 BAA ranks 10th in the WCC.

NO JOSHIN' AROUND HERE
Freshman Joshua Woodworth has been on an absolute tear at the plate in the last few weeks. In that time span (18 games) the Ventura, California native is hitting .378 (28-for-74), including .382 with runners on base (13-for-34), .375 with the bases empty (15-for-40), and .467 with RISP (runners in scoring position, 7-for-15). He has 18 RBI with two out this season, the most on the team (next highest is Trey Dunn with 11). He has also reached base safely in each of the last 22 games (team-best). He had a team-high 14-game hitting streak snapped last Thursday night at Santa Clara.
