MALIBU, California — The Pepperdine women's soccer team visits San Diego on Friday, but in a non-league match. The two teams will meet in West Coast Conference play on April 3.
MATCH #3 — Friday (February 12) at Torero Stadium in San Diego, California: Pepperdine (0-1-0) at San Diego (0-0-0) at 1 p.m.
WATCH/ONLINE — San Diego will produce a webstream for the WCC Network. Links to broadcasts and live stats can be found at PepperdineWaves.com.
HOME ATTENDANCE — Per the current COVID-19 guidelines set by the state of California and Los Angeles County, fans will not be permitted to attend home matches at Tari Frahm Rokus Field.
OPPONENT — Pepperdine is 15-11-2 all-time against San Diego. The Waves have won four in a row, and eight of the last 10. Pepperdine has won two straight and four of the last five in San Diego. The two schools also played non-conference matches in 1993 (the WCC began a year later) and 2012. The Waves won 1-0 at USD last year on a Madi Cook penalty kick in overtime, while Devyn Gilfoy received WCC Player of the Week honors after getting the shutout as an emergency goalkeeper.
LAST WEEK — The delayed season got put off a bit longer as the Waves' scheduled opener at USC was postponed. Pepperdine then began the season at home on Sunday against #4 UCLA, a Women's College Cup semifinalist in 2019. Though the Waves outshot the Bruins 13-10 and had an impressive second half, three first-half goals led UCLA to a 3-0 win.
ANDERSON — Senior midfielder Joelle Anderson was picked in the third round of the 2021 NWSL Draft by the Houston Dash, but she's got business to finish in Malibu before she joins the pros. The three-time All-WCC pick (two-time first team) and two-time All-West Region honoree (2019 first team) has accumulated 21 goals (eight game-winners), 13 assists and 55 points in her career. She's tied for ninth all-time in goals at Pepperdine. Anderson has been named to the MAC Hermann Trophy preseason watch list.
WCC — The Waves were picked to finish third in the WCC preseason coaches poll. The order went as follows: BYU, Santa Clara, Pepperdine, Gonzaga, Portland, San Francisco, San Diego, Loyola Marymount, Saint Mary's and Pacific ... Joelle Anderson and Trinity Watson, who made the All-WCC first team in 2019, both made the preseason All-WCC team ... The league schedule features games on nine consecutive Saturdays.
ROSTER NUMBERS — The Waves' 28-player roster breakdown is eight seniors, five juniors, five sophomores, one redshirt freshman and nine true freshmen. Pepperdine has eight returning starters and 16 letterwinners back. Returning players accounted for 81% of last season's goals (29/36) and 78% of the assists (25/32). The entire starting defensive backline that produced 10 shutouts in 2019 returns, as does both goalies who started that season.
LAST SEASON — In fall 2019, the Waves advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 11th time in program history, and the sixth time in the last nine years. After playing one of the nation's most challenging non-conference schedules (which included the only win over eventual national champion Stanford), Pepperdine came in third place in the WCC and received an at-large bid. Pepperdine fell to Texas Tech in a penalty-kick shootout in the first round to finish 11-6-3 on the season.
WAVES IN THE PROS — Several Waves have made their marks professionally. Lynn Williams is a three-time NWSL champion (2016 Western New York Flash, 2018 and 2019 North Carolina Courage). In 2016, she was also the NWSL MVP and Golden Boot winner. As a member of the U.S. National Team, she's earned 31 caps and scored 10 goals. Bri Visalli, who has been part of the U.S. U-23 team, played in England for a couple of seasons before joining the NWSL's Houston Dash in 2020. In January 2019, the Waves had two NWSL Draft selections for the first time in Hailey Harbison (first round to North Carolina) and Michelle Maemone (third round to Utah). Rylee Baisden was named the 2019 Player of the Year in Australia's NPLW and joined the North Carolina Courage in 2020. The Waves have had an Olympian (Roxanne Barker, South Africa, 2012 and 2016) and a Women's World Cup participant (Anisa Guajardo, Mexico, 2015). Anna Picarelli played for Italy and Kristi DeVert was the first Wave to suit up with the USWNT.
