Wong Adds Steve Astor to the Waves' Sidelines

MALIBU, Calif. — Head Coach Scott Wong announced the hiring of Steve Astor to the Pepperdine women's volleyball sidelines as an assistant coach.

"Steve is a great addition to the staff, and to the program," said Wong.  "He is a gifted and passionate teacher of the game and has invested deeply into years of coaching.  He has already made an impact in our gym in the short time he has spent in Malibu."

Astor brings over 17 years of coaching experience at various levels including college, high school and club to the program.  His first volleyball coaching position began in 2003 and since then, he has stretched his talents into coaching both football and basketball arenas during that time as well.

"It is impossible for me to put into words how excited and grateful I feel to be joining the Pepperdine family," said Astor.  "The main reason this job was so attractive to me was the special people in the volleyball program and throughout this university.

"Scott Wong has done a remarkable job of creating such a selfless, loving culture.  It has been such a joy to get started working alongside he and Tara Hittle, who have been so supportive throughout the process.  The young women on the team have already greatly impressed me from day one with their character and humility.  I feel honored to be joining such a special place. Go Waves!"

Most recently, Astor coached as a volunteer assistant at University of Washington women's volleyball, with primary responsibilities being placed on coaching liberos and back row defense, while also having served as in-game serve and pass coordinator.  He also served a brief stint as a volunteer assistant for the UC Irvine men's squad.

Before getting into the college game, Astor served as the Head Varsity Girls Coach for Corona del Mar High School, leading his squads to an impressive 139-49 record and six League Championships from 2013-18. His teams earned recognition as a top-100 team in four out of six seasons he was at the helm.

Prior to CDMHS, Astor was the Head Varsity Boys Coach at Newport High School from 2011-13, leading the team to a 1st place finish at the 2012 OC Championships Tournament.  He served as an assistant coach at Orange Coast College from 2008-11, helping lead the team to State Runner-Up finishes in 2008 and 2009 and Semifinalist status in 2010 and 2011.

His longest stint to date has been with Balboa Bay Volleyball Club, a stand that began in 2003 and ended in 2018 and that carried him through various levels of the program.  He led the 17-1 squad from 2012-14, leading the team to silver medal finishes at US Junior Nationals in 2012 and 2014.  While with the club, he coached with the likes of current USA Men's Volleyball Head Coach John Speraw.

While at BBVC, Astor was also an Associate Head Coach for both girls and boys and Laguna Beach High School from 2006-12, leading the boys' squad as Interim Head Coach for a part of the season to 2010 CIF and CIF State Regional titles in 2010.  He led the girls' team to CIF D2 crowns in both 2006 and 2007.

Astor earned his Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Management from Vanguard University in Costa Mesa, Calif., graduating in 2012.  He obtained his Single Subject Teaching Credential in Mathematics from National University in 2018 as well.

Astor is the brother to Pepperdine men's volleyball alumnus Doug Astor, who was a part of the program from 2010-12.  Astor currently resides in Santa Monica, Calif.
