Aggies Attack Tops Waves' Defense in Four-Set Loss

Box Score MALIBU, Calif. — Despite a third set comeback win, the Pepperdine women's volleyball team was felled by the attack efforts of Texas A&M on Saturday night in Firestone Fieldhouse to close out the final day of the Pepperdine Tournament.

After trailing by two with 25-17 and 25-19 set losses, the Waves countered with a 25-19 third set win, but Pepperdine (3-3) was unable to rally in the fourth as the Aggies' (4-2) offensive efforts proved too strong for a final 25-15 set score.

Shannon Scully and Rachel Ahrens each marked double-figure kills with 18 and 13 respectively.

WAVES VS. AGGIES
The stat lines were relatively close throughout, but the Aggies .365 hitting percentage on 55 kills surpassed the Waves' .231 output on 52 kills.  In addition, four aces to none and 10.0 team blocks to Pepperdine's 7.0 put the home team under.  On the back line, A&M amassed 48 digs and 67 serve receptions without a single error, to the Waves 42 digs and 80 receptions with four errors.

PLAY-BY-PLAY
The match and first set started with a close back-and-forth output by both sides, but Texas A&M had the early edge off a 3-1 open and advanced it to 14-9 later in the set.  Despite six kills from Shannon Scully in the set, the Aggies were able to close it down with a 25-17 set win.

The Aggies came out equally as strong in the second set, amassing a 4-0 lead to open things up.  After establishing a 17-8 lead throughout the set, the Waves started to battle back and kills from Kayleigh Hames and Scully and a block from Scully and Tarah Wylie brought the home team within six at the 23-17 mark. TAMU was able to pick up the second set 25-19 win, however.

Pepperdine more than rallied in the third – the Waves commanded the set, taking the lead after a 7-7 tie fueled on a block from Alli O'Harra and Ahrens and three-consecutive kills by Wylie for the 18-10 advantage.  The Aggies pieced some points together near the end of the set, but Pepperdine came right back and back-to-back kills by Scully put the Waves in a position to close.  Rachel Ahrens and O'Harra would do just that for the home team, as the pair put a couple of kills on the floor to close the set with a 25-19 win and send things to a fourth.

In the fourth set, despite an even 5-5 tie to open, the Aggies came out swinging to take over the lead and put the Waves behind 18-10.  Kills from Hames and O'Harra late in the set helped the cause, but couldn't help Pepperdine rally enough, as the opposition closed the match with a 25-15 set win for the four-set overall victory.
