PLAY-BY-PLAY
Fairfield came out firing in the first set, pulling ahead 10-5 to open the match, and keep the lead throughout towards a 25-20 first set win to put Pepperdine behind on set to none.
The Waves weren't having it after that, however, and after a 7-7 tie to start the second set, back-to-back kills from
Rachel Ahrens gave the home team the edge it needed to propel forward. More smashes from
Tarah Wylie and
Kayleigh Hames helped the cause and put Pepperdine up 15-12. Although the opposition countered at 17's, multiple attack errors from across the net, courtesy of a strong service output from
Shannon Scully featuring an ace put the Waves ahead 21-17. More solid kills from Hames and Scully closed the set down 25-22 and evened the overall score up.
After evening the score, Pepperdine refused to let up, and rolled with the momentum from the previous set to open the third 5-0. Scull helped the cause with another strong service effort, including another ace, and blocks from
Alli O'Harra and Ahrens. Shortly after, Hames found herself at the service line and gave the home team another run with an ace and blocks from Wylie and Scully to pull ahead by a staggering 13-3. The Stags were able to string a few points together, but another ace from Scully and multiple kills for Ahrens pushed the Waves over the edge and to a 25-13 set win.
Intending to close the match in four, Pepperdine once again came out with big arms and kills from Hames, Wylie and
Isabel Zelaya with
Madison Shields and the service line, gave the tam a 12-3 lead. Fairfield closed the gap to six points at 12-6, but Scully, Ahrens and Hames once again found the floor to pull ahead 18-10. The Waves continued on with a 7-3 run to close the set, including a big Hames service output and kills from Wylie and Scully for the Waves' win.
