PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Waves came rolling out of the starting gate fired up and swinging hard, taking an early 7-5 lead with multiple kills from
Shannon Scully and cruising towards an 11-7 advantage after an ace from
Rachel Ahrens and kills from
Tarah Wylie,
Alli O'Harra and Scully. Big blocks by Scully and O'Harra later in the set had Pepperdine keeping composure and working towards an eight-point lead at the 20-12 mark. Although the opposition was able to climb to 20-points in the set, kills from Wylie and multiple attack errors from across the net helped the cause for a 25-20 first set Waves' win.
It was in the second set that Utah found their form, however, and with errors from Pepperdine were able to climb to a 16-11 advantage in the middle of the set. Although the Waves were able to bring the score within two-points at the 18-16 mark, and then within one at the 21-20 mark, the opposition closed the door with some choice attack efforts and finished the set with a 25-22 set win to tie the overall.
The momentum continued for the Utes in the third set, as the opposition opened with a 14-10 lead. The Waves stayed close behind, however, working point-for-point en route to a 23-22 tied score late in the action, but kills from across the net once again put the Waves under with a 25-23 set score.
In the final set, the Utes jumped out to a 6-1 lead early, and kept cruising to a 13-3 advantage. Pepperdine was unable to rally enough to close the gap, and the opposition eventually took home the 3-1 win after securing the final set 25-13.
In the final match of the day, the opposition got the early jump on the match, pulling ahead by three, before the Waves were able to counter and go up 10-8 with kills from Scully and a pair of aces from Ahrens. Despite the edge, the Mustangs were able to counter the Waves' attack and put select attack attempts tomorrow for the 25-22 set win.
Pepperdine found the momentum in the second set, and after a 10-10 tied score, kills from Ahrens and Scully brought the Waves up 15-12. With Wylie at the service line, Pepperdine went on a 5-2 run courtesy of back-to-back blocks by O'Harra with Scully and
Isabel Zelaya, to set the energy on high. Although the Mustangs were able to string a few points together at the end, Hames and Ahrens put down some kills late in the set and the Waves finished with a 25-18 set win to tie the match.
Cal Poly came out of the starting gate firing in the third set, however, working with a .640 hitting percentage in the set en route to the 25-17 win to pull ahead 2-1.
In the fourth set, the Waves were unstoppable busting out with kills from Ahrens and
Hannah Frohling and a block from O'Harra and Frohling towards an 11-3 lead. More kills from Wylie and Scully late in the action kept the Waves moving forward for an 18-11 advantage. Cal Poly put some kills together to close the gap to a 21-21 tie late in the action, but an error from across the net put the ball in the Waves court. Final kills from Wylie and a big block from Wylie and Frohling finished things up with a 25-21 set score.
The Mustangs came out firing yet again in the fifth and final set, amassing a 5-1 lead and working towards a 7-2 lead, but the Waves countered with a block from Zelaya and Wylie, an ace from Frohlng and more kills from Wylie to bring the score within one at 7-6. Pepperdine continued with the momentum and tied things up at 10's, but kills from across the net, an ace and a few costly errors were eventually the downfall for Pepperdine as Cal Poly closed the set 15-11 and took the overall win.
