MALIBU, California – Former Pepperdine men's volleyball standout Matthew Pollock has returned to the program as its newest assistant coach, head coach David Hunt announced today.
"I'm excited to be back with a good group of young Waves," Pollock said. "I'm looking forward to seeing the growth of this team as we work together every day. David (Hunt) is the hardest-working volleyball coach there is. It's going to be awesome working with him. With his knowledge of the game, he's up there with the best. Obviously, it's also great to still have Marv (Dunphy) here and it's going to be a great benefit to me as a young coach to see him around the office."
Pollock played for the Waves between 2009-12 -- when Dunphy was the head coach and Hunt was an assistant -- and was a starter at middle blocker his final two seasons. He earned All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation honorable mention status after his senior season. He played in 71 matches and 242 sets over his four years, averaging 1.89 kills and 1.05 blocks with a .435 hitting percentage. He hit .443 as a senior and .423 as a junior, which rank fourth and ninth, respectively, on Pepperdine's single-season records list.
Since graduating from Pepperdine in 2012 with a degree in organizational communication, Pollock has played professionally in Finland, Switzerland, Portugal, Italy and Germany. He won the Italian Cup with Roma Scarabeo in 2017-18.
His experience with USA Volleyball began while he was a student-athlete at Pepperdine, and he's played with the U.S. National Team as recently as 2018 with trips to Argentina and Mexico, the latter for the Pan American Cup.
"It's great to have Matt back at Pepperdine," Hunt said. "He just finished a long professional career and he has valuable information to share with our young athletes. Matt cares about teaching young people and will help them achieve their goals in the sport."
Pollock, a native of Orland Park, Illinois, was an all-state player at Sandburg High School.
