MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine baseball team could not overcome two ninth-inning runs from Saint Mary's in Saturday's 7-5 West Coast Conference loss. Prior to the game, Pepperdine honored former Pepperdine and Houston Astros legend Mike Scott with a canvas on the outfield wall.
The Waves (24-24, 14-12 WCC) jumped out to an early lead against the Gaels (32-20, 16-10 WCC), but Saint Mary's scored three unanswered runs in the final two innings to take the win.
BIG WAVES
- Junior infielder Brandt Belk (Houston, Texas/Westside HS) went 1-for-3 on the day with an RBI.

GAME RECAP
The Gaels got on the board first, scoring one run in the second inning on an RBI single. In the bottom half, the Waves got a one-out double from
Aharon Modlin. After a
Reese Alexiades walk and a single from
Joe Caparis, Mike Malinchak hit a bases loaded single, scoring Modlin from third. An RBI groundout from
Charlie Welch then scored Alexiades to give the Waves a 2-1 lead through two innings.
In the third,
Wyatt Young led the inning off with a single, and Belk was hit by a pitch. After a groundout, Young was brought in by a sacrifice fly from Modlin. Alexiades then singled to right field, bringing in Belk, giving the Waves a 4-1 lead after three complete innings.
The Gaels answered the Waves in the fourth, after a leadoff double and a single cut the Waves' lead in half. After four innings, Pepperdine led 4-2. Saint Mary's then scored again in the sixth on a double off the wall. After six innings, Pepperdine led 4-3.
Saint Mary's got a home run from JC Santini to tie the game at four in the seventh. In the home half, after Saint Mary's starter Ken Waldichuk exited,
Quincy McAfee singled, moving Malinchak to third before Belk singled Malinchak in to retake the lead for the Waves, who led 5-4 after seven.
In the eighth, Saint Mary's tied the game on a single into left. The Waves could not get a run across in the eighth, so the game moved to the ninth locked at five runs. In the top of the ninth, Saint Mary's scored twice on a bases-loaded single and a sacrifice fly to take a 7-5 lead into the home half. McAfee had the Waves' best chance to extend the game, but a deep flyout ended the chance at a comeback.
WCC TOURNAMENT
With the win, Saint Mary's secured a spot in the WCC tournament next weekend. The Waves must win on Sunday, and after Gonzaga's win on Friday, the Bulldogs and LMU must split the next two games in order for the Waves to earn the four-seed in the tournament.
UP NEXT
The rubber match between the two teams is set for Sunday, which is also Senior Day for Pepperdine. The Waves will be honoring nine seniors who will be lacing it up at Eddy D. Field Stadium for the final time.
