Waves Explode for 12 Runs in Game Two Victory

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Pepperdine baseball team's offense came alive, scoring 12 runs over six innings in Saturday's 12-7 victory over Portland. Matthew Kanfer and Quincy McAfee both homered for the Waves.
 
The Waves (23-21, 13-10 WCC) held off a comeback from the Pilots (23-25, 5-18 WCC) in the late innings to pick up the victory.
 
BIG WAVES
  • Senior Matthew Kanfer (Playa del Rey, Calif./L.A.C.E.S.) led the Waves, going 3-for-5 with five RBI including a three-run home run in the sixth inning.
  • Junior Quincy McAfee (Houston, Texas/Westside HS) went 3-for-6 on the day, including his second home run of the year.
  • Freshman Wyatt Young (Honolulu, Hawaii/Mid Pacific Institute) went 4-for-5 on the day and scored two runs.
  • Senior LHP Easton Lucas (Simi Valley, Calif./Grace Brethren HS) was solid on the mound, throwing six full innings allowing just one run and five hits.
 
GAME RECAP
The Waves got things going in the first when Kanfer had an RBI single to score McAfee after he reached on an error. After one inning, the Waves led 1-0.
 
In the third, Pepperdine had runners on first and second when Kanfer doubled to left center, scoring Wyatt Young. Duncan McKinnon then hit a sacrifice fly to score Belk from third. Kanfer scored from third when Charlie Welch reached on an error to give the Waves a 4-0 lead through three innings.
 
McAfee came up in the fourth inning with two outs and hit a fly ball to deep left field for his second home run of the year, giving Pepperdine a 5-0 lead through four innings.
 
Pepperdine really broke away in the fifth inning. The inning started with back-to-back-to-back doubles from Cory Wills, Welch, and Aharon Modlin to get two more runs across. After a groundout, McAfee joined the party with an RBI double of his own to score Modlin. Young then singled to move McAfee to third before Belk singled in McAfee for the fourth run of the inning. Kanfer then came up with runners on the corners and hit a ball into deep left center field and over the fence for a three-run home run to give the Waves a 12-0 lead after five innings.
 
The Pilots made a valiant comeback beginning in the sixth inning getting their first run on an RBI single. Lucas exited after the sixth, his final line in the victory was 6.0 IP, 1 R, 5 H, 6 K.
 
Portland got two home runs in the eighth inning to cut the Waves lead to 12-5. They then scored twice in the ninth to make it 12-7, but couldn't complete the comeback as the Waves won their third straight game.

The Waves look to complete the sweep tomorrow at 1 p.m. in Portland.
