MALIBU, California – David Wieczorek of the Pepperdine men's volleyball team earned his third straight All-American award from the American Volleyball Coaches Association on Monday, while becoming the first Wave to make the first team since 2015.
Wieczorek (Chicago, Ill./Loyola Academy), a senior outside hitter, previously made the second team in 2018 and was honorable mention in 2017.
Additionally, three more Waves received All-American honorable mention status: senior outside hitter Kaleb Denmark, sophomore setter Robert Mullahey and senior opposite Michael Wexter. It's the first All-American award for each of the three.
Since the AVCA began awarding All-Americans in 1991, this is the 27th time a Wave has made the first team. Wieczorek is the Waves' eighth player to earn AVCA All-American honors at least three times. This is just the second time that four Waves have been honored with AVCA All-American status in a single year. It also happened in 2015.
Wieczorek previously earned the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Year award for the second year in a row. He was also the MVP of the MPSF Tournament. He ranks second in the MPSF and ninth nationally in both kills/set (3.95) and points (4.67). He's fourth in the MPSF and 14th nationally in hitting percentage (.383). He's been on a tear of late, hitting .500 or better in eight of the last 10 matches. In Pepperdine history, he ranks sixth all-time in service aces (133) and 12th in kills (1,274).
Denmark (Redlands, Calif./Arrowhead Christian Academy) made the All-MPSF second team. He's third on the team in kills (2.86).
Mullahey (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS) was All-MPSF honorable mention and made the MPSF All-Tournament team. He leads the MPSF and is fifth nationally in assists (10.37).
Wexter (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way West HS) earned All-MPSF first team and was on the MPSF All-Tournament team. He's second on the team and in kills (3.57) and leads the squad in digs (2.02).
These four honorees helped the Waves to win both MPSF regular-season and tournament titles and make it into the NCAA Championships for the first time in more than a decade. The #3 Waves (22-6) play #13 Princeton (18-12) on Tuesday night (April 30) in the quarterfinals at Long Beach State's Walter Pyramid at 7:30 p.m.
