MALIBU, California – After the Waves won both Mountain Pacific Sports Federation regular-season and tournament titles, Pepperdine men's volleyball head coach David Hunt was rewarded with MPSF Coach of the Year honors today.
It's the first career MPSF award for Hunt, who is in his second season as head coach. It's the fourth overall for the Waves, with Marv Dunphy winning in 2002, 2005 and 2007.
The Waves (22-6) are ranked #3 nationally and will begin NCAA Tournament play a week from Tuesday (April 30) with a quarterfinal matchup against either Barton or Princeton at Long Beach State's Walter Pyramid.
Hunt has led the Waves to their first MPSF Tournament title and NCAA Championships appearance in more than a decade. It's also just the second 20-win season in the last 10 years. The Waves posted a perfect 14-0 record in Firestone Fieldhouse, the fourth time in program history that Pepperdine has gone unbeaten at home.
Pepperdine ranks first in the MPSF in hitting percentage (.346), kills (13.48), assists (12.60) and digs (9.28). David Wieczorek won his second consecutive MPSF Player of the Year award last week (and was named MPSF Tournament MVP), one of four Waves to earn All-MPSF honors.
In two seasons as head coach, Hunt has a 37-14 (.725) record.
