Waves Roll Past UC Davis

MALIBU, Calif.Matthew Kanfer of the Pepperdine baseball team led the way with five RBI as the team exploded for 15 runs in a 15-3 victory over UC Davis on Saturday.

The Waves (5-6) got hot and stayed hot, as they combined for 16 hits, while limiting the Aggies (6-7) to just seven.

BIG WAVES
  • Senior outfielder Matthew Kanfer (Playa Del Ray, Calif./L.A.C.E.S.) had the best day for the Waves, as he went 4-for-6 with five RBI, thanks in part to a three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth.
  • Junior infielder Quincy McAfee (Houston, Texas/Westside HS) had another outstanding day, going 2-for-4 with three RBI.
  • Senior outfielder Cory Wills (Henderson, Nev./Yavapai College) went 2-for-5 on the day with two RBI.
  • Junior LHP Easton Lucas (Simi Valley, Calif./Grace Brethren HS) had his best outing of the year, going 6.0 innings, giving up one run on just four hits, and striking out three batters in his first win of the year.

GAME RECAP
The Waves got started right away, as Wills hit a swinging bunt that the Aggies' catcher overthrew, allowing Kanfer to score from first, giving the Waves a 1-0 lead after one.

In the third, back-to-back singles to lead off the inning resulted in McAfee up with no outs and runners on first and second. He promptly smacked a single into left, bringing in Aharon Modlin. After a fielder's choice put runners on the corners, Wills came up and tripled down the right-field line, scoring both McAfee and Wyatt Young. He was brought to the plate on an RBI-groundout from Charlie Welch, resulting in a 5-0 Pepperdine lead after three innings.

After back-to-back singles started the fourth inning, Modlin singled in Billy Cook, and Young singled in Mike Malinchak, putting the Waves up 7-0 after just four innings.

In the fifth, the Waves scored yet again, this time all with two outs. After Welch reached on an error, and two quick outs, Malinchak walked. Welch scored on a wild pitch, and two walks in a row, plus a bases-loaded hit by pitch scored Malinchak. Kanfer then singled, scoring Modlin from third, to extend the Waves' lead to 10-0.

The Aggies got their first run of the game in the sixth, and their second in the seventh, but the Waves responded in the seventh, with another set of back-to-back doubles giving them two more runs. After seven full innings of play, the Waves led 12-2.

After another Aggies run in the eighth, Malinchak walked and McAfee was hit by a pitch for the second time in the game. Kanfer then came up and blasted a ball off the netting in left field for a three-run home run, solidifying the Waves' dominant 15-3 win.
