MALIBU, Calif. –The Pepperdine baseball team completed its first sweep of the 2019 season with a 4-0 win over UC Davis at Eddy D. Field Stadium on Sunday. Senior pitcher
Jonathan Pendergast was lights out, striking out nine batters over eight innings.
The Waves (6-6) scored in three consecutive innings to put the game out of reach, keeping the Aggies (6-8) to just four hits.
BIG WAVES
- Senior RHP Jonathan Pendergast (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) was electric, compiling a final line of 8.0 IP, 4 H, 9 K and 1 BB.
- Junior infielder Quincy McAfee (Houston, Texas/Westside HS) went 3-for-4 on the day with two doubles and an RBI.
- Sophomore outfielder Mike Malinchak (Delray Beach, Fla./.American Heritage HS) went 1-for-4 on the day, but made the most of the one hit, driving in two runs with a double to left field.
- Sophomore infielder Billy Cook (Monument, Colo./Lewis Palmer HS) went 2-for-3 today, with an RBI.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
After four innings of scoreless baseball, the Waves broke through in the fifth inning when, after
Wyatt Young reached on an error and advanced to second, McAfee roped a ball down the right field line, scoring Young from second to give the Waves a 1-0 lead.
In the sixth, another error was made by the Aggies, allowing
Duncan McKinnon to reach after a Cook single.
Aharon Modlin moved the pair to second and third with a sacrifice bunt, and Malinchak doubled down the left field line, scoring both Cook and McKinnon to push the Waves lead to 3-0 after six innings.
McAfee hit his second double of the day to lead off the bottom of the seventh inning, and was moved to third on a groundout from
Matthew Kanfer. Cook singled him in, securing what would be the final, 4-0 lead for the Waves.
Through all of this, Pendergast was mowing batters down from the mound. Last year's West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Year had nine strikeouts over eight innings and allowed just a single free pass. He was relieved by
Raul Salazar in the ninth, who got back-to-back strikeouts to end the game.
