MATCH RECAP
The doubles competition got off to a good start for the Waves as Luque Rico and Sborowitz defeated their opponents in quick fashion, giving up only two games. The Cardinals got a match back, as they defeated Jankowiak and Garapedian 6-2. Oetzbach and Zeitvogel had a gutsy win, taking it all the way to seven games to clinch the doubles point for the Waves.
With a 1-0 overall match lead, the Waves got down to business at the beginning of the singles competition. Sborowitz was dominant in his 6-1, 6-1 win over Thibault De Negri. His win was closely followed by Zeitvogel's win over Chris Adams. The Cardinals got wins on courts five and six before the match was clinched by Luque Rico on court two, when he defeated Marko Guzina 6-2 in the second set after a hard-fought 7-5 first set win. In the final match on court, captain
Adrian Oetzbach won his first set over Nemania Guzina 6-3 but dropped the second set 4-6. He came back to take the match victory with a 6-3 win in the third set.
QUOTABLE
"This was Matias' best performance of the year," said head coach
Adam Schaechterle. "He led the way with his energy and execution. Adrian competed like a captain on a day when he didn't have his best stuff. Winners play their best points under pressure and he did that today with the match on the line in doubles and singles.
"As a team, we are excited about how much we've improved since the start of the year. But, we are not satisfied with today's dual. We need a few starters to take more responsibility for embracing our program's competitive standard from the first point to the last."
