Pepperdine Falls to Top-Ranked Vanderbilt in Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NASHVILLE, Tenn. – After a cancellation and two postponed games due to rain, the Pepperdine baseball team was finally able to get a doubleheader in against No. 1 Vanderbilt on Sunday. The Commodores proved to be too tough, as they defeated the Waves 6-3 in the morning and 6-2 in the afternoon.

The Waves (3-3) got runs early on in the second game, but answers from the Commodores (5-1) proved to be too much.

BIG WAVES
  • Freshman catcher Charlie Welch (Clearwater Fla./Jefferson HS) continues his hot start in collegiate baseball, going 4-for-7 on the day, with two RBI.
  • RS-Sophomore infielder Brandt Belk (Houston, Texas/Westside HS) went 2-for-6 in the two games.

In the sixth inning, Brandt Belk doubled to left and Matthew Kanfer followed with a double of his own, scoring Belk for the Waves' first run of the game. A strikeout and a line drive ended the inning, and Vanderbilt led 5-1 after five and a half innings. The Commodores answered back in the bottom half to retake a 5-run lead after six full innings.

In the ninth, after Reese Alexiades tripled into deep center field, and was plated by a Charlie Welch single. The single run in the ninth was all the Waves could muster, as they fell 6-3 in the day's opening game.
