Waves Host PCH Cup Rival LMU on Friday

MALIBU, Calif. — There is one lone match on the docket this week for the Pepperdine women's volleyball team, as the Waves welcome PCH Cup rival Loyola Marymount to Firestone Fieldhouse on Friday at 7 p.m.
 
MATCH #24 — Friday (November 8) at Firestone Fieldhouse in Malibu, Calif.: Pepperdine vs. Loyola Marymount at 7 p.m.
 
PROMOTIONS — There will be a Hyundai, Pepperdine Fill it Forward Challenge rally towel giveaway for the first 500 fans.  Also, a giveaway promotion where upon entry student fans can get entered into a drawing for a piece of Pepperdine volleyball gear, courtesy of the Waves.  Any student fan wearing a Pepperdine shirt will get an extra two ticket entries.  Tickets will be drawn throughout the match.

HYUNDAI'S FILL IT FORWARD CHALLENGE — Pepperdine Athletics and the office of sustainability have partnered with Hyundai, and will be competing in the Fill It Forward Challenge.  Activation started yesterday on main campus, but the competition runs from November 4-22.  
 
Pepperdine will be competing against both LMU and Santa Clara in this challenge.  The program will promote water sustainability through a unique tech-forward contest, offer a firsthand look at the future of electrified and fuel cell mobility, explore the importance of sustainable energy, and better prepare students to be leaders in areas of climate change and environmental sustainability

The winning school's Office of Sustainability will receive a $100,000 grant.
 
TICKETS — Each match costs $10 for adults and $8 for alumni, children, seniors and non-Pepperdine students.  Tickets are free for Pepperdine students, faculty and staff with a valid Pepperdine ID.  Purchase tickets in advance at 866-WAVE-TIX or at the ticket office on game day.

SQUAD GOALS — Pepperdine has posted a 13-10 overall record this season, with a 9-3 West Coast Conference record to rank 3rd in the league.  The Waves have gone 8-5 at home and 4-4 on the road so far this season, heading into a one-match week of competition.
 
As a squad, the Waves average 13.40 kills/set on a .246 output, along with 12.31 assists/set, 1.62 aces/set, 13.94 digs/set and 2.15 blocks/set this season. 
 
Shannon Scully, Hannah Frohling and Rachel Ahrens lead on the attack front, amassing 3.17, 2.95 and 2.75 kills/set respectively.  Scully does so on a .239 success rate, while adding 3.04 kills/set, 0.48 blocks/set and 0.26 aces/set.  Frohling has posted 0.34 aces/set, 1.62 digs/set and 0.44 blocks/set as well, while Ahrens leads with 0.41 aces/set, as well as adding 0.64 blocks/set.
 
Tarah Wylie and Alli O'Harra lead at the net with 1.12 and 0.80 blocks/set on average respectively.  Wylie has posted 103 total blocks this season, including a team-high 13 solo rejections.  She also puts up 2.45 kills/set on a .341 clip, with 0.26 aces/set.  O'Harra has marked 72 total blocks with five solo denials, while producing 1.48 kills/set on average.
 
Isabel Zelaya and Tayah Mahi have both spent an ample amount of time in playmaker duties, marking 9.58 and 8.68 assists/set respectively.  Zelaya has played in 71 sets, posting 680 total assists, while adding 1.96 digs/set and 0.42 blocks/set for the Waves.  Mahi has amassed 37 sets played and put in 321 total assists as well as 1.68 digs/set and 0.30 blocks/set for her team.  The pair have produced a .246 collective team hitting percentage.
 
RECORDS, CAREER-HIGHS AND WCC WEEKLY HONORS, OH MY! WYLIE HAS A WEEK — Redshirt-senior middle blocker Tarah Wylie earned a spot in the record books on two separate occasions while leading the Waves to a pair of road West Coast Conference wins this past weekend at Gonzaga and Portland. 
 
In the sweep over Portland, Wylie highlighted with 11 blocks, ranking atop the all-time Pepperdine women's volleyball team record books for most blocks in a singles three-set match during the rally scoring era.  She also amassed an astonishing .818 hitting percentage in the five-set win over Gonzaga on Thursday after posting 18 kills with no errors on 22 swings in the match.  That hitting percentage ranked 3rd in the all-time record books for highest attack percentage in a single match, also during the rally scoring era.
 
Throughout the weekend, Wylie amassed 3.94 points/set, while averaging 1.75 blocks/set, 2.62 kills/set, 0.50 digs/set and 0.38 aces/set in the all-around effort.  She posted a .485 hitting percentage on the weekend, while adding 21 smashes, three aces, four digs and 14 blocks with one solo rejections.
 
On Thursday against the Zags, Wylie had the 18-kill match on a .818 success rate, while also adding a pair of aces, two digs and three blocks for her team.  Then in the sweep on Saturday, she highlighted with the 11 blocks including one solo, while adding three kills, two digs and an assist.
 
LAST WEEK, TODAY — The Waves had two WCC wins last week, defeating Gonzaga in a five-set thriller before sweeping past Portland on the road.  In the win over the Bulldogs, the Waves amassed 71 kills on a .348 output, with nine aces, 71 digs and 7.0 team blocks.  The opposition posted 54 kills on a .250 hitting percentage, with seven aces, 65 digs and 8.0 team blocks.  Tarah Wylie led with 18 kills and no errors for a .818 success rate, earning her spot in the record books.  Rachel Ahrens was next with 16 kills on a .375 output, along with a team-high four aces.  Each Hannah Frohling and Shannon Scully put in 13 kills as well, while both Frohling and Wylie added two aces apiece.
 
Against Portland, the Waves put in 38 kills on a.280 clip and added five aces, 44 digs and an impressive 13.0 team blocks.  The Pilots put in 35 kills on a.094 output, with four aces, 47 digs and 4.0 blocks throughout.  Wylie once again led the Waves, but this time in blocks with 11 rejections including a solo block, topping the Pepperdine record books for most blocks in a single three-set match.  Scully led the offensive with 15 smashes on a .464 clip, while adding eight digs and five blocks as well.  Frohling was good for 10 kills on a.400 with two aces and Hana Lishman led with 11 digs for the Waves as well.
 
THE COMPETITION — The Lions have gone 13-11 overall this season, with a 7-5 West Coast Conference output. Last week, LMU defeated Portland in four sets, before falling to Gonzaga in four. 
 
All-time, the Waves have gone 57-24 against the Lions, dating back to 1976 when the Waves first swept the Lions.  Pepperdine has posted a seven-match winning streak from 1984-86, a 10-match winning streak from 1987-91 and a 12-match streak from 2006-12 throughout the years.  Last season, the Waves took both wins by way of sweep and earlier this season, Pepperdine defeated LMU in four sets in Gersten Pavilion.
