MALIBU, California – The 2020 schedule is set for a Pepperdine men's volleyball team that is coming off Mountain Pacific Sports Federation regular-season and tournament titles and a place in the 2019 NCAA Tournament semifinals.
"The 2020 schedule gets us on the road early in the season," said Pepperdine Coach David Hunt, the 2019 MPSF Coach of the Year who is heading into his third season in charge of the Waves. "We have a chance to be tested by some teams that we haven't played in the last few years. As men's volleyball continues to grow, we look forward to helping push the expansion with a diverse schedule. The MPSF schedule is always tough. The collection of top-level talent continues to provide a backdrop for us to be battle-tested come NCAA Tournament time."
The 2020 schedule actually begins in late 2019 with an exhibition home match on December 30 against the University of Guelph, a Canadian squad. Another team from Canada, Brandon University, visits on January 1. The official season opener is January 5 against Cal Lutheran in Firestone Fieldhouse.
Pepperdine then heads east for three matches, playing at Daemen College (located in Amherst, N.Y.) on January 14, followed by a neutral-site match vs. Harvard at Daemen on January 15, and finally a road match at George Mason on January 17.
The Waves' most notable non-conference match will likely be January 24 at Long Beach State, as the 49ers won the national title last season. The Waves also have a non-conference home-and-home with UC Santa Barbara (away on February 21, in Malibu on February 26).
MPSF play begins with road matches at Stanford (February 6) and BYU (February 8). The Waves' home MPSF dates are February 12 (Concordia), February 14 (USC), March 13 (UCLA), March 27 (Grand Canyon), April 9 (BYU) and April 11 (Stanford).
The 25-match schedule includes 12 home events (plus the two exhibitions).
Last year's Waves went 23-7 overall and won the MPSF with a 9-3 record. Pepperdine advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2008 and beat Princeton in the quarterfinals before falling to host Long Beach State in the semifinals. The Waves will be much younger in 2020, as both starting outside hitters, both middle blockers and the opposite all graduated. Setter Robert Mullahey, who earned 2019 AVCA All-American honorable mention status, and last year's two liberos, Noah Dyer and Spencer Wickens, are the most experienced returners.
