THE COMPETITION — Pepperdine holds a 41-32 record against San Diego all-time, going back to the first time Pepperdine and San Diego went head-to-head in 1979, when the Waves swept past the Toreros.  The Waves kept sweeping through USD for the next 13-straight matches and won 19-straight before the Toreros would pick up their first win in five sets in 1993.  The Waves went on another 11-match winning streak from 1998-2003, while USD recorded a nine-match streak of their own from 2012-16.  Last year, the Waves lost once on the road and won in five sets at home.  This season, USD has gone 15-4 overall with an undefeated 8-0 start to conference action with a 13-match winning streak.  The Waves and Toreros played early in October, with USD taking the tough five-set win.  Last week, San Diego downed then-ranked #9 BYU in five sets in Provo to make the team's way into the AVCA Coaches Poll at #22.

BYU is the only WCC school that has a winning record against Pepperdine with a 26-7 lead since 1976.  In the first meeting, however, the Waves won 2-0, before the Cougars won the following four matches.  The last time the Waves took wins over BYU was from 200-2011 when the team collected four 3-1 victories in 2000, 2005, and 2011 twice.  BYU is currently on a 14-match winning streak over Pepperdine including two 3-0 wins last season.  This season, the Cougars are currently ranked #12 in the AVCA Coaches Poll with a 16-3 overall record and a 7-1 WCC record.
