PLAY-BY-PLAY
After trailing 3-0 to open the match, the Waves came back and pulled ahead by four-points at the 9-5 mark. Kills from
Rachel Ahrens and
Hannah Frohling helped the Waves stay ahead throughout, including 16-12 and 22-16 leads late in the action. Although the opposition started to string a few points together late in the set, pulling within two at the 23-21 mark, the Waves buckled down and a kill from Frohling, followed by a
Tarah Wylie,
Isabel Zelaya block collaboration ended things 25-21 in the Waves favor.
San Diego opened the second set on a 6-0 lead, but the Waves were able to counter and close the gap to one point 9-8. It was an opening lead that Pepperdine would be unable to overcome, however, as the Toreros kept ahead of the set and eventually won 25-19.
The third set looked similar to the second, with USD taking a quick lead and holding throughout a majority. Kills form Frohling and Wylie late in the action helped tie the set at 20-20, and each side worked point-for-point en route to a 24-24 tie. A block from across the net and a final USD kill put the opposition up 26-24 and 2-1 in the match.
The fourth set looked to be in the Toreros' favor to open with an 8-5 lead, but the Waves had other things in mind and closed the gap to 10-apiece. More big kills from Wylie and
Shannon Scully kept the Waves in favor until the 17-17 mark, when strong service outputs gave USD a 20-18 lead. The set saw tied scores from 20-20 all the way to 25-25 before a pair of kills from Scully and Wylie and a solo block from Scully closed things down 27-25 and forced a fifth set.
In the fifth, San Diego came out swinging to start with a 3-0 lead and continued en route to a 9-4 lead with a strong attack output. Back-to-back blocks from Ahrens and
Alli O'Harra started to close the gap, and a kill and ace from Scully finished the job with an 11-11 tied score heading into the final set. After a 13-13 tie, a USD timeout helped the home team figure out what they needed. The Toreros came out of the break with a kill and a block to close the five-set match with a win.
