MALIBU, California – Track season begins this weekend for Pepperdine as the women's program gets its indoor season underway with a meet in New Mexico.
Â
The Waves are competing at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Invitational, hosted by the University of New Mexico, on Friday and Saturday (Jan. 18-19) in Albuquerque. The other two indoor meets are February 1-2 at Boise State and February 8-9 at Washington.
Â
"The team is really excited to get going," said Pepperdine head coach Robert Radnoti, who begins his 13th season. "It's going to be a great experience for our team. We're going to Albuquerque and that works out fine for our sprinters and hurdlers. It's a little bit high-altitude for our distance runners, but it's a great opportunity to get into competition and really start the 2019 season off nicely."
Â
This is the fourth year that Pepperdine has sponsored women's indoor track. Last year, school records were set by sophomore Abbey Meck in the mile and 3,000 meters and sophomore Caila Tongco in the 60-meter hurdles.
Â
Outdoor track season begins on February 16 with the annual UC Santa Barbara/Westmont three-team meet, and that'll be the first opportunity for the Pepperdine men to compete.
Â
Nick Heath, who holds school records in the 3,000, 5,000 and 10,000 meters (as well as a pair of cross country records), is a senior now heading into his final semester competing for the Waves. Junior Treet Allison is the school-record holder in the 400, 800 and 1,500 meters. Also on Pepperdine's all-time lists, sophomore Kieran Halewyn is #3 in the 1,500 meters and sophomore Brandon Davis is #4 in the 400 meters.
Â
"The men have been training really hard," Radnoti said. "They're going to have an outstanding season. I think this year we're going to break a lot of school records. We've got an outstanding group of freshmen in on both the men's and women's sides so it will be really exciting to see how they do. It'll be a super season for Waves track."
Â
The women's outdoor team also features two school-record holders in senior Catie Barilla in the 400 hurdles and junior Talya Holenstein in the 800 meters. Sophomore Sheridan Davis clocked in at #4 in the 100 hurdles last year, while Meck put her name at #3 in the 5,000 and #5 in the 1,500.
Â
Two freshmen that impressed during cross country season were Jackson Felkins and Karl Winter, and they are expected to carry that momentum onto the track this spring. Among the newcomers looking to make an impact on the women's side are Tiffany Egbo, Keeley Maloney and Alexa Ortega.
