MALIBU, Calif. – Redshirt-senior standout David Wieczorek and alum Matt Pollock were selected to the 14-man roster for the U.S. team going to Cordova, Veracruz, Mexico to compete in the Pan American Cup from Aug. 28-Sept. 2. Pepperdine men's volleyball Head Coach David Hunt was selected to be the head coach for the Americans as well, as announced Team USA on Friday morning.
The top-five finishing teams at the Pan Am Cup will qualify for the 2019 Pan American Games on July 26-Aug. 11 in Lima, Peru.
Wieczorek (Chicago, Ill./Loyola Academy) was one of 26 to earn a spot on the national training roster and in early August travelled with Team USA to compete against Argentina in a series of three friendlies. The redshirt-senior earned the start in the second match after coming in as a sub in the first. In his start, the outside hitter marked five kills, two blocks and six digs for America. He will serve as an outside hitter on the Pan Am Cup squad as well.
"Dave is someone that is passionate about volleyball and being great," said Hunt. "He is working hard to get better at his craft every day. It has been awesome to see his journey along the way.
"Dave had the goal of coming to Pepperdine and making his way onto the national team. Any time you get to see someone live that out is pretty sweet."
Pollock was a 2012 graduate of Pepperdine, originally from Orland Park, Ill. As a middle blocker, he led the Waves in hitting percentage in his junior and senior campaigns, hitting above a .425 clip on both occasions. He also led the team in blocks during those seasons, with 129 posted in his senior campaign. Pollock ranks 4th in the Pepperdine men's volleyball record books with a .443 hitting percentage during a single season and ties for 9th for most sets played in a single season with 113 in 2012.
"Matt has been working hard to continue to improve every year," Hunt said. "His commitment to learning and staying in the best shape possible has opened some doors for him later in his career. It's great to see a guy with his personality and approach to the game earn a spot on a USA roster this summer."
