Power Bats Lift Waves In Game One of WCC Tournament

STOCKTON, Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball team got three home runs, two coming back-to-back thanks to Matthew Kanfer and Jordan Qsar, to help defeat San Francisco at Banner Island Ballpark 8-2 in Game One of the West Coast Conference Tournament.

The No. 1 seeded Waves (30-22) got seven strong innings from WCC Freshman of the Year Cooper Chandler, keeping the Dons (28-29) to only two runs.

  • Junior outfielder Matthew Kanfer (Playa del Ray, Calif./L.A.C.E.S.) led the Waves on the day, going 2-for-4 with three RBI including a two-run home run in the bottom of the third inning.
  • Junior Outfielder Jordan Qsar (El Cajon, Calif./Valhalla HS) hit a home run right after Kanfer, one of two hits on the day for the WCC Player of the Year.
  • Sophomore infielder/outfielder Duncan McKinnon (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Redondo Union HS) hit a home run in the second inning, and had a sacrifice fly in the sixth.

The Waves got started scoring early, thanks to a solo home run from Duncan McKinnon in the second inning off of USF Starter Thomas Ponticelli, giving the Waves a 1-0 lead.

In the third inning, Chase Lambert drew a two-out walk, eventually scoring on a Brandt Belk double. Belk scored on two-run shot from Matthew Kanfer to give the Waves a 4-0 lead. Jordan Qsar promptly hit a towering no-doubt home run. The Waves led 5-0 after three innings of play.

Belk hit a laser into right center field in the fifth inning for a standup double and was singled in by Kanfer for his third RBI of the day. After a Qsar single, Kanfer scored from third on a sacrifice fly from McKinnon to give the Waves a 7-0 lead.

The Dons got their lone two runs in the top of the sixth after a 2-RBI single from Michael Perri. Pepperdine answered back with one run of their own when Josh Davis scored on a passed ball, locking in the 8-2 victory for the Waves.
