MALIBU, Calif. -- The Pepperdine baseball team captured its 18th West Coast Conference Championship along with the #1 seed in the conference tournament on Sunday, thanks to a bit of help from Gonzaga, who lost to Santa Clara. The Waves fell to Portland 4-0 at Eddy D. Field Stadium in the final game of the regular season.
The Waves (29-22, 17-10) were outhit by the Pilots (23-29, 12-15) 15-5 in the game on Sunday afternoon.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Pilots got their scoring started in the fourth inning with back-to-back home runs from Cody Hawken and Ryan Hoogerwerf to take a 2-0 lead after four.
They scored their final two runs in the ninth inning on back-to-back RBI singles from Beau Brundage and Hawken.
The Waves had the bases loaded in the ninth, but could not get any runs across. Pepperdine only left five runners on base during the game, but could not get the bats going in their final regular season game.
In the WCC Tournament (May 24-26), the Waves will be the number one seed, taking on San Francisco in the first game of the tournament on Thursday. LMU and Gonzaga will face off in game two at 7 p.m. that same night. The tournament is double-elimination with the championship game coming May 26 at 3 p.m. with the possibility of a second championship game at 7 that same day.
NOTABLES
- The regular season title is the Waves' 18th overall title in program history and the first since 2015.
- Pepperdine as a school has won six WCC titles this year (Women's Soccer, Women's Tennis (2), Women's Beach Volleyball and Men's Golf).
