BOX SCORE GAME 2
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball team used another strong pitching performance to take game one of a doubleheader 3-2 Sunday afternoon against CSUN, but couldn't complete the three-game series sweep as the Waves gave up four homers in game two and lost to the Matadors 8-4.
Christian Stoutland, Jonathan Pendergast and Michael Mahony combined to blank CSUN over the final eight innings of game one Sunday as a two-run sixth inning gave the Waves the lead for good at 3-2.
- Junior Christian Stoutland (Calabasas, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) picked up the win in game one, going five innings and giving up two runs on four hits with four strikeouts and three walks. He's now 3-0 on the season with a 1.61 ERA.
- Junior Jonathan Pendergast (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) tossed 3.1 innings of scoreless relief in game one, struck out two and gave up two hits.
- Sophomore Michael Mahony (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison HS) picked up his first save of the season, leaving the tying run stranded at second base in game one.
- Senior Chase Lambert (Malibu, Calif./Malibu HS) went 4-for-9 with a home run during the doubleheader.
- Junior Cory Wills (Henderson, Nev./Basic HS) went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run in game two.
GAME 1
CSUN got on the board first as the Matadors scored on a two-out, two-run single in the first inning. The Waves answered with a run in the second as Jordan Qsar singled to lead off the inning, made his way to third on a CSUN error and scored on an Aharon Modlin RBI single through the right side to make it 2-1.
The score remained that way until the sixth when a pair of walks to start the inning led to a Jordan Qsar RBI single to tie the game 2-2. A walk loaded the bases before Modlin gave the Waves the lead at 3-2 on a fielder's choice - his second RBI of the game and sixth in his last two games.
From there it was the Wave pitching that did the rest as Pepperdine didn't give up a hit from one out in the second inning until the seventh inning and held the Matadors scoreless over the final eight innings as Stoutland, Pendergast and Mahony silenced the CSUN bats.
GAME 2
The Matadors again struck first as they blasted a two-run homer in the bottom of the second to take a quick lead.
The Waves cut the lead in half in the third as Chase Lambert blasted his second home run of the season to make it 2-1 CSUN. The Matadors, however, scored again in the bottom of the third to make it 3-1 before in the fourth inning Cory Wills hit an RBI double and Billy Cook followed with an RBI ground out to tie the game 3-3.
But again the Matadors answered as a two-out hit by pitch came back to haunt the Waves as CSUN followed with a two-run homer to make it 5-3 Matadors after four. CSUN then hit its third two-run homer of the contest in the fifth to make it 7-3 and added a solo homer in the seventh to make 8-3.
The Waves got one back in the eighth when Mike Malinchak doubled in Wills to make the final 8-4.
- Lambert finished the three-game series going 7-for-13 (.538)
- Starting pitchers Christian Stoutland (3-0, 1.61 ERA) and Wil Jensen (3-0, 0.62 ERA) are a combined 6-0 with a 1.05 ERA, 41 strikeouts and 39 hits allowed in 51.1 innings this season.
- Five Pepperdine hitters had multiple hits in Sunday's second game of the doubleheader.
