Waves Defeated in PCH Cup Road Battle

MALIBU, California " Life on the road continued to be difficult for the Pepperdine men's basketball team, as Loyola Marymount captured Saturday afternoon's PCH Cup game in Gersten Pavilion, 85-79.

The Waves (4-22, 1-13 West Coast Conference) shot 51% from the field but the Lions (8-17, 3-11) got a career-high 31 points from Steven Haney along with a few slight statistical advantages.

  • Senior center Matthew Atewe (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/Washington) followed up Thursday's career-high 19-point performance vs. San Diego with 18 more points (on 8-for-11 shooting), plus six rebounds.
  • Sophomore forward Kameron Edwards (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Etiwanda HS) had 16 points, nine rebounds and three assists.
  • Freshman guard Colbey Ross (Aurora, Colo./Eaglecrest HS) collected 16 points and nine assists. He took sole possession of Pepperdine's freshman record for assists in a season with his first one of the game and he now has 147.
  • Junior guard Eric Cooper Jr. (Ontario, Calif./St. Anthony HS/Nevada) contributed 15 points, including four three-pointers.
  • Freshman guard Trae Berhow (Watertown, Minn./Watertown-Mayer HS), back after missing the last two games with an ankle injury, had 10 points and six rebounds.

  • The Waves outshot the Lions 50.9% to 46.7%.
  • Pepperdine made a season-high nine three-pointers and hit on 53% from beyond the arc. LMU made 10 three-pointers (six by Haney) for 44%.
  • The Lions went 19-for-26 (73.1%) from the foul line, while the Waves were 16-for-20 (80.0%).
  • Pepperdine made 14 turnovers to LMU's 12, and the Lions had a 16-13 edge in points off turnovers.
  • LMU had four players score in double-figures.

The Waves led for a good portion of the first 10 minutes, but their last lead came at 23-22 with 10 minutes to go after an Atewe dunk. A 19-5 LMU run put the Lions up by 13 at 41-28, and they went into the half ahead 43-35.

Pepperdine closed the gap to one point a couple of times early in the second half, first at 48-47 on an Edwards basket and again at 51-50 on a Ross three-pointer.

But at 54-52, LMU scored seven straight points, got its lead back to double-figures at 65-55 and went up by as many as 16 at 75-59.

Pepperdine closed the gap late, scoring 10 straight points to make it a five-point game at 77-72 with a minute and a half left, and got it down to four in the final 30 seconds, but time ran out on the Waves.

  • Per the usual, two players were out with Harrison Meads (concussion) and Nolan Taylor (season-ending shoulder surgery) on the sidelines. The Waves' total number of player-games missed due to injury or illness is up to 64 this season. This was the 19th time in 26 games that the Waves have had multiple key rotation players out.
  • Though the Waves have won nine of the last 12 in the series, LMU won its third straight in Gersten Pavilion. The all-time series now stands at 100-68 in Pepperdine's favor.
