MALIBU, Calif. – Pepperdine baseball hall of famer Rob Picciolo passed away at the age of 64 this week.
Picciolo, who was inducted into the Pepperdine Hall of Fame in 1982, played for the Waves in 1974 after transferring from Santa Monica College. He would go on to play nine seasons in the Major Leagues before starting his extensive career as a professional coach.
Picciolo was the longest-tenured coach in Padres history after serving in various roles with the organization from 1986 to 2005. He then went on to serve as a coach with the Angels for seven years, ending his career as Mike Scioscia’s bench coach from 2010 to 2013.
During his time at Pepperdine, Picciolo earned All-District honors after helping the Waves to a conference championship and spot in the NCAA District Playoffs. The following year he was selected fourth overall by the Oakland Athletics in the 1975 January MLB Draft.
Picciolo made his Major League debut in 1977 with the A’s and would also play for the Brewers and Angels during his near decade in the big leagues. He is one of 35 Pepperdine players who went on to have MLB careers and had the seventh longest tenure of any former Wave in the majors.
