Jan. 13, 2017 LAS VEGAS, Nev.: The 3rd-ranked Pepperdine women's tennis team excelled at UNLV's Fertitta Tennis Complex this Friday, as the Waves advanced through the first rounds of singles and doubles at the Freeman Memorial Tournament.
In singles, 8th-ranked Luisa Stefani, 22nd-ranked Mayar Sherif Ahmed, Laura Gulbe and Apichaya Runglerdkriangkrai all collected wins to start the day after a long rain delay.
Stefani bested #5 Oklahoma State's 106th-ranked Sofia Blanco with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 final mark. She will play #4 Stanford's Melissa Lord at 10 a.m. tomorrow morning. Ahmed defeated #10 Duke's 76th-ranked Kaitlyn McCarthy with a pair of commanding 6-2 set wins. She will go head-to-head with top-ranked Florida's 39th-ranked Spencer Liang at 10 a.m. tomorrow.
Gulbe advanced to the round of 16 after a round of 32 victory over Stanford's 71st-ranked Caroline Doyle by way of 4-6, 6-4 and 6-3 final set scores. She will face UNLC's 48th-ranked Carol yang at 10 a.m. on Friday. Runglerdkriangkrai took 6-1 and 7-5 set scores off of #2 North Carolina's unranked Maggie Kane in flight two. She moved on and will challenge Duke's Becky Smaller tomorrow morning. Finishing out singles play, Dzina Milovanovic fell to Florida's 30th-ranked Anna Danilina with a 6-1, 6-3 final score.
Christine Maddox will also play her first singles match of 2017 tomorrow as the Wave faces UNLC's Mercedes Lopez.
On the doubles side, 3rd-ranked Ahmed and Maddox put down Duke's Meible Chi and Alyssa Smith with a 6-4 victory. The duo will be challenged by Stanford's Taylor Davidson and Emily Arbuthnott tomorrow afternoon.
Gulbe and Milovanovic also competed in flight two, dominating UNC's Cassandra Vazsquez and Maggie Kane, 6-2. The pair will face UNLV's Jovana Kenic and Mercedes Lopez tomorrow. Then, 8th-ranked pair, Stefani and Runglerdkriangkrai, were felled by Stanford's Caroline Doyle and Melissa Lord with a 6-3 final mark.
