SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Bri Visalli came up with the game-winner in overtime for the Pepperdine women's soccer team, as the Waves grabbed a 2-1 road victory at Cal Poly on Friday night.
The win allows Pepperdine to close regular-season non-conference play with a 5-3-2 record, while Cal Poly falls to 4-5-1 on the year.
"Really fantastic performance from our women tonight," said head coach Tim Ward. "We were able to come back after going behind, even though we were playing great, and the quality of our first goal was tremendous. Katy definitely deserves that goal as she's been training really well. Bri Visalli then got a tremendous winner in OT through a collaborative effort with Natasa Eleftheriou. Tasa definitely did a great job with her minutes tonight as a target forward and we were really proud of her."
After both teams scored in the first half, it would take until the 95th minute for Visalli (San Jose, Calif./Valley Christian HS) to end it. The Cal Poly keeper Sophia Brown tried to come out and clear a pass into the box, but after colliding with both a Pepperdine player and Mustang defender, the ball rolled right to Visalli, who fired it into the back of the net with one touch.
It was Visalli's second goal of the year and the second overtime win this season for the Waves.
Cal Poly got on the board first in the match, when Stephanie Magellan knocked a bouncing ball up and over Hannah Seabert (Riverside, Calif./Woodcrest Christian HS) to make it a 1-0 game in the 17th minute.
Just under eight minutes later Katy Byrne (Katy, Texas/Seven Lakes HS) evened things back up. Byrne received a pass from Taylor Alvarado (Santa Paula, Calif./Santa Paula HS) at the top of the box and fired a shot that hit the inside of the right post before finding its way into the net. It was Byrne's second goal of the season.
Immediately preceding the Pepperdine goal, Seabert made a phenomenal diving save on a Mustang shot, to keep the Waves within one.
The teams traded early attempts in the second half, but neither team could break the tie. Nicole Leggio (Upland, Calif./St. Lucy's Priory HS) had a late header that went on target, but it was saved by Sophia Brown.
The Waves had a 14-11 shot advantage in the game and put six balls on target. Cal Poly had five shots on goal.
"Overall it's a great result and were hoping its a game that can give us a bit of momentum heading into WCC play," said Ward.
Pepperdine opens up West Coast Conference play next week, heading to Portland on Friday and Gonzaga on Sunday.
