Waves Crash Down on Alabama State in Straight-Set Sweep

Sept. 2, 2016

Final Stats

TUCSON, Ariz. — The Pepperdine women's volleyball squad worked together this Friday afternoon in the second match of the Arizona Invitational in McKale Memorial Center, crashing down over Alabama State in the Waves' first straight-set sweep of the season. Pepperdine dominated the Hornets with 25-18, 25-14 and 25-9 set scores en route to the win.

The Waves (4-1) commanded the attack, with 42 kills and only 13 errors on 93 total swings for a .312 success rate. Pepperdine also posted nine service aces, 36 assists, 40 digs and 3.0 team blocks. The team owned the back row, allowing the Hornets (1-5) only a -.047 attack output after giving up only 18 kills, with 22 errors on 86 attempts. ASU did out-block the Waves with 5.0 team blocks, but only produced two aces and 17 assists throughout.

Five Waves had five kills and six Waves hit for a .333 hitting percentage or higher. Both sophomore Tarah Wylie (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral HS) and freshman Hana Lishman (Kailua, Hawai'i/Punahou HS) were big at the service line with three aces, a career-high for Lishman. Sophomore Jenna Tunnell (Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vista HS) also posted two aces.

Wylie posted five kills on a .273 attack output, while adding seven digs and two block assists. Lishman led the squad with nine digs and 15 successful service receptions. Tunnell put in four kills, 10 assists and two digs and blocks for the Waves.

Also with five kills apiece were junior Ashley Harris (Petaluma, Calif./Casa Grand HS/Arizona), sophomore Heidi Dyer (San Clemente, Calif./Saddleback Valley Christian HS) and freshmen Jasmine Gross (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS) and Jaiden Farr (Peterson, Utah/Morgan HS).

Harris was strong with a 5-0-12 outing on the offensive for a .417 success rate. Dyer produced a .500 hitting percentage (5-1-8) with five assists and three digs. Gross tabbed a .444 attack percentage with a 5-1-9 posting on the night and Farr made her Waves' debut with a 5-2-9 output for a .333 percentage on the attack.

In the first set, the opposition worked out to a 7-3 lead early on, but back-to-back kills from Lyons and an ace by freshman Hannah Frohling (Edmond, Okla./Edmond North HS) evened the score 10-10. After tying the set, a strong service output by Wylie, including her first ace of the night, helped the Waves pull ahead to a 17-13 advantage. There would be no let-up either, as two kills from Gross and one from senior Gaby Palmeri (Davis, Calif./St. Francis HS) led the Waves to a 25-18 set one win.

After the late Pepperdine momentum in the first set, the opposition came out strong in the second set, amassing a 9-6 lead. Three back-to-back-to-back service aces from Lishman helped the Waves tie the set up, however, and the set was all-Waves after that. The Waves continued to crash down on the Hornets and a commanding service output from Farr, including two kills from Wylie and solo smashes from Tunnell and Frohling during the run, along with a block from Wylie and Tunnell put Pepperdine ahead 21-12. Another block from Palmeri and Tunnell and a final blow from Palmeri put the Waves up 2-0 on the night after a 25-14 set win.

Playing off the energy in the second set, Pepperdine came out hot in the third, gaining an 8-3 lead. The attacks kept coming and the Waves held a dominating 22-5 lead down the back stretch. The opposition had some light in the end of the set, but Pepperdine refused to give Alabama State an edge and shut down the Hornets with kills from sophomore Adria Johnson (Apex, N.C./Broughton HS), Farr and Harris for the final 25-9 score.

Johnson and Frohling each also put four kills on the leaderboard. Johnson with an impressive .800 hitting percentage (4-0-5) and Frohling with an addition ace, four digs and a block assist.

Tomorrow, Pepperdine will finish the Arizona Invitational with Arizona at 6 p.m. (PT). Find live stats and live stream here: http://gowav.es/2bT5hVh. Follow the Waves on Facebook and Twitter @WavesVolleyball for immediate updates, recaps and more!
