MALIBU, Calif. - The No. 25 Pepperdine women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with Kansas at home on Sunday afternoon.
The Waves equalized late in the first half, but couldn't find the game winner through overtime, moving to 4-3-2 on the year. Kansas moves its record to 5-3-2 on the year.
The Waves fell behind 1-0 in the 17th minute when Grace Hagan cleaned up a failed clearance by Pepperdine and netted her fourth goal of the year.
Taylor Alvarado (Santa Paula, Calif./Santa Paula HS) got the equalizer in the 36th minute, receiving a pass from Michelle Maemone (San Jose, Calif./The King's Academy) in the left side of the box and then lofting a shot that just ducked inside the right post. It was Alvarado's first goal of the year.
Both teams had good chances in the second half, but the Waves got the best opportunity to go ahead in the 89th minute when Bri Visalli (San Jose, Calif./Valley Christian HS) got a pass deep in the box and took a shot that just sailed over the crossbar.
Nicole Leggio (Upland, Calif./St. Lucy's Priory HS) put a shot on target early in the first overtime, but it was saved by the Jayhawk keeper. Pepperdine then had another opportunity in the 95th minute when a ball got loose in front of the Kansas goal, but nobody could get a clean food on it.
Kansas got a clean look at the goal just before the end of the first overtime, but Hagan sent her shot high.
With five minutes left, Alvarado nearly netted the game-winner, but her shot dipped outside the right post this time. The Jayhawks pressed late and had a couple of opportunities, but the Pepperdine defense held on for the draw.
Hannah Seabert (Riverside, Calif./Woodcrest Christian HS) made five saves in the game and Kansas keeper Regan Gibbs made six stops. Kansas put up 23 shots to 18 for Pepperdine.
The Waves will be back in action on Friday when they head to Cal Poly for their final non-conference matchup of the regular season. Pepperdine opens West Coast Conference play the following week at Portland and Gonzaga.
