July 22, 2016 MALIBU, Calif. " Pepperdine alum Fred Winters will represent his native Canada at the upcoming Rio Olympics as the country's men's volleyball roster was officially announced today.
This will be the ninth straight Olympics in which a Pepperdine alum has competed in the men's volleyball competition.
Winters is a long-time member of the Canadian National Team and serves as team captain. He's played for the squad for more than a decade since graduating from Pepperdine in 2004. He won a bronze medal with the squad at the 2015 Pan Am Games, and the country is coming off a first-place showing at the FIVB World League Group 2.
It's the first time Canada has qualified for the Olympics since 1992. The Canadians are in Pool A along with Brazil, Italy, the United States, France and Mexico. Canada will begin play against the USA on August 7. The quarterfinal round will begin on August 17.
Winters has played club volleyball in such countries as France, Austria, South Korea, Italy, Russia, Turkey, Qatar, Germany, China and Brazil.
Winters, who played at Pepperdine from 2001-04, earned AVCA All-American first team honors in 2004 and second team in 2003.
Several other Pepperdine men's volleyball alums will be in Rio de Janeiro in other capacities. Marv Dunphy will be a scout coach for the USA women, while Kevin Barnett and Dain Blanton will be analysts for NBC.
