SPOKANE, Wash. " The No. 25 Pepperdine women's soccer team scored a season-high five goals on Sunday in a 5-0 win over Gonzaga in West Coast Conference play. Pepperdine scored four times in the first half and never looked back.
Five different Waves scored in the road victory as Pepperdine moves to 6-3-3 overall on the year and 1-0-1 in WCC play. Gonzaga falls to 4-5-2, 0-2-0 WCC. The five-goal win was the Waves' largest margin of victory since a 2014 road win at Pacific.
"We had a great response today after a tough tie at Portland on Friday," said head coach Tim Ward. "I'm very proud of the entire team today. Every player who traveled with us got in and contributed. I love to see two of our girls, Hailey Stenberg and Rachael Collins, get their first career goals, and then Christina Settles and Danielle Thomas get their first goals of the year."
Settles (Oceanside, Calif./Oceanside HS) and Nicole Leggio (Upland, Calif./St. Lucy's Priory HS) each posted a goal and an assist in the game to lead a Pepperdine attack that scored four times in the first 37 minutes. Stenberg (Huntington Beach, Calif./Mater Dei HS) got things started when the freshman found the back of the net for the first time in her career with a brilliant strike from outside the box in the 16th minute.
Just over five minutes later Thomas (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison HS) knocked in a header that bounced her way from Leggio to make it 2-0. Rylee Baisden (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) also got an assist on the goal, giving her a team-leading 11 points on the year. With the assist and her goal later in the game, Leggio is second on the squad with 10 points in her freshman campaign.
Settles sent home a deep shot that found its way over the Gonzaga keeper in the 24th minute and then in the 37th minute after Stenberg was taken down in the box, Collins (Littleton, Colo./Valor Christian HS) knocked home the penalty shot to make it a 4-0 game.
The Pepperdine defense was more than up to the task to hang on the rest of the way, finishing off the sixth shutout of the year for the Waves. Leggio made it a 5-0 game with a score in the 88th minute.
"Our defense was really tremendous today," said Ward. "Shutouts get it done in conference play. This is a really positive start to the WCC season for us."
Hannah Seabert (Riverside, Calif./Woodcrest Christian HS) had to make just two saves in goal on the day and was replaced in goal for the final five minutes of play.
Pepperdine outshot the Bulldogs 11-8 in the game, scoring on five of the eight balls they put on target. The Waves are now 5-0 in games where they score multiple goals this season.
The Waves will be back in Malibu next week when they host San Diego on Thursday and then BYU on Saturday. Both of those games can be seen live on TheW.tv.
