Pepperdine-LMU Box Score
MALIBU, Calif. -- Behind 18 points from Lamond Murray Jr., 17 points from Jett Raines and another double-double by Stacy Davis, the Pepperdine men's basketball team outlasted rival Loyola Marymount, 68-65, in overtime on Saturday in a West Coast Conference and Wells Fargo PCH Cup game.
The Waves (8-6, 1-2 WCC) began a three-game homestand with their seventh consecutive victory over the Lions (7-7, 0-3), and the 31st win in the last 38 meetings. It was also Pepperdine's 17th victory in the last 18 matchups with LMU in Firestone Fieldhouse. The Waves also improved to 5-0 at home this season.
Pepperdine led the contest for 40:21 of the 45 minutes, while LMU was only ever ahead for 14 seconds late in the second half.
The Lions took their first and only lead of the game at 61-59 with 1:47 to play in regulation after a three-point play by Adom Jacko. The Waves responded immediately, getting a lay-up by Raines (Coppell, Texas/Coppell HS) to tie the game back up with 1:33 left.
LMU had three chances on its final possession after grabbing two offensive rebounds but missed all three of its shot attempts. The Waves had the last look, but a three-point attempt by junior guard Jeremy Major (Pasadena, Calif./Maranatha HS) was off the mark, and a last-gasp shot by Raines didn't go.
The Waves scored first in overtime on two free throws by Raines, and then Murray (Los Angeles, Calif./Bishop Montgomery HS) finished a fast-break with an alley-oop dunk courtesy of Major, putting Pepperdine ahead 65-61 with three minutes to go. The Waves only went 3-for-6 from the free throw line the rest of the way, but LMU made only two of 10 shots in the extra period.
After Major made one of two free throws with 11 seconds left, LMU had the last shot but Steven Haney's three-point attempt missed.
Murray scored 10 of his 18 points in the first half as the Waves took a 26-24 lead at the break. Raines collected 15 of his 17 points after halftime.
Davis (Laveen, Ariz./Fairfax HS) tied his career high with 15 rebounds and also had 11 points. It was his sixth double-double of the season (the Waves are 5-1 when he gets one), and the 26th of his career (moving him into a tie for seventh place on Pepperdine's all-time list). Davis also moved into the Waves' career top 10 in rebounding, and became just the 12th player in school history to amass 1,500 career points.
Freshman forward Kameron Edwards (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Etiwanda HS) added 11 points for the Waves, who outshot LMU 43.1% to 37.3% and had a 46-36 rebounding edge.
The Waves were playing shorthanded as three of their shooting guards were out (Shawn Olden/ankle, A.J. Lapray/hip, Atif Russell/shoulder) and that made a difference as the Waves went just 1-for-11 on three-pointers and were outscored 16-3 in bench points.
The Waves caught a break at the free throw line, as their 65.4% (17-for-26) was better than LMU's 58.8% (10-for-17).
Unlike the previous two WCC games, the Waves got off to a fast start in this one. They were up 10-0 at the first media timeout and took their biggest lead of the game at 14-2 less than seven minutes in.
LMU closed the gap to two at halftime, but Pepperdine went up by 10 at 39-29 with 13:50 to go after a steal by junior guard Amadi Udenyi (Oakland, Calif./De La Salle HS) led to a Murray slam dunk. Still, the Lions kept chipping away until eventually tying the game at 49 with 6:29 left, and eventually taking the lead in the final two minutes of regulation.
Pepperdine continues its homestand with upcoming contests against Pacific (Thursday, Jan. 7, 7 p.m.) and Saint Mary's (Saturday, Jan. 9, 1 p.m.) in Firestone Fieldhouse. The Pacific game will be shown on TheW.tv and the Saint Mary's contest is the WCC Game of the Week and will be shown locally on Time Warner Cable SportsNet.
