
Pepperdine Shuts Down UC San Diego in Straight Sets

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The #4 Pepperdine men's volleyball team won its sixth-straight match this evening, dropping UC San Diego 25-17, 25-10, 25-18. Scott Rhein and J.J. Mosolf led the Waves with 10 kills apiece.
Pepperdine improves to 11-1 in 2015, including a 7-1 tally against MPSF opponents.
The Waves overpowered the Tritons, controlling the tempo with a .364 (44 kills-12 errors-88 attempts) hitting percentage. UCSD was held to just a .093 (24-16-86) clip. Pepperdine leads the league in opponent hitting percentage, now down to .165 on the season following tonight's win.
Rhein (Pleasant View, Tenn./Aaron Academy) put down 10 kills while hitting a season-high .562 (10-1-16). The senior fell one dig shy of the double-double, ending the match with nine.
Mosolf (Saugus, Calif./Hart HS/Hawaii) came in off the bench with a season-high 10 kills. He replaced Parker Kalmbach (Coto de Caza, Calif./Tesoro HS) on the opposite side, who made his final exit out of the match with six kills.
Matt West (Seattle, Wash./Shorewood HS) scored a career-high nine points, charting three kills and three blocks to go along with a career-high four aces. The setter also contributed with 31 assists and nine digs.
Overall, the Waves had a superb night from the service line with eight aces and just seven errors. The Tritons kept the errors to a minimum as well with just five, but the home squad only managed to deposit two aces.
Josh Taylor (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) sided out the first point of the night with a kill, and Pepperdine would not trail again. The Waves sided out at a 72-percent rate, compared to just 44-percent on the UCSD side.
Taylor finished the night with six kills, while Nikola Antonijevic (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Stevenson HS), Mitchell Penning (Peoria, Ill./Westminster Christian Academy) and James Gehrels (Tucson, Ariz./Salpointe Catholic HS) put down three each.
Matthew Schnitzer paced the Triton offense with seven kills.
The Waves conclude the week with a 7 p.m. match at UC Irvine on Saturday, February 14.
