PROVO, Utah — After a season-high 32-30 first-set score, the Pepperdine women's volleyball team dropped the next three sets to end the 2015 campaign on the road at nationally ranked No. 11 BYU's home court, 32-30, 9-25, 21-25, 23-25.
As a team, the Waves tallied 50 kills and 25 errors in 167 attempts on the attack. The team amassed nine total blocks and 84 digs on the night towards the effort. Pepperdine will end 2015 with a 17-14 overall record and an 8-10 record within West Coast Conference play.
Freshmen Tarah Wylie (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral HS) and Nikki Lyons (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas HS) led on the offensive with Wylie commanding the offense with 13 kills and only five errors in 29 attempts for a .276 hitting percentage. She also picked up four blocks, five digs and one service ace for the Waves. Lyons posted 12 kills, seven digs and once ace for Pepperdine as well.
Junior Brooke Honeycutt (Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vista HS) rounded out the attack effort in double-figures with 10 kills for the team. She tabbed only one error in 23 attempts for an impressive .391 attack percentage, while adding three blocks and two digs.
Seniors Becca Strehlow (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS/UCLA) and Lara Dykstra (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union HS/Nebraska) also were key in the Waves' effort. Strehlow led the team with 43 assists, while adding 18 digs, four blocks and two kills on the night. Dykstra led the effort with 24 digs, one ace and two assists throughout four sets.
Freshmen Heidi Dyer (San Clemente, Calif./Saddleback Valley Christian HS) and Jenna Tunnell (Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vista HS) and sophomore Ashley Morgan (Anaheim Hills, Calif./Canyon HS) rounded out the big numbers for Pepperdine.
Dyer tabbed eight kills, three blocks and three digs, Tunnell was good for five kills and two digs and Morgan finished with 12 digs and one ace on the night.
The Waves gave fans a show in the first set, picking up a season-high 32-30 set win over the Cougars after a hard-fought bout. Both teams were in the set from the first serve, with the score remaining tied throughout most of the match. Pepperdine broke away after the 11-11 mark to accrue a 19-14 lead that turned into a 23-16 lead. The home team battled back into the match and tied things up 23-23, before the teams went point-for-point to the eventual final score 32-30, delivered by Pepperdine.
The second set was a different story, however, as the Cougars came out more than strong and ready for vengeance after the first set challenge. BYU amassed a quick 11-1 lead early on and refused to let up to give the Waves an inch, finishing off the set with a 25-9 set score to even the match at an even 1-1 on the night.
Pepperdine was back in action in the third set, building a small early lead, 16-12 over the Cougars. The Waves continued to keep a strong presence, amassing a 19-16 lead before BYU started to work back into the set. The home team tied the set, 21-21, before picking up the final four points needed to win the third set and put a 2-1 match score on the board.
It was a fight to stay in the match for the Waves in the fourth and final set, with Pepperdine working for an early 6-6 tie with the Cougars. BYU then broke away to put Pepperdine at another deficit to work back from with a 17-11 mark later in the set. After a 20-14 home team advantage, the Waves brought the score to a one-point deficit at the 21-20 mark. Despite Pepperdine's best efforts, the Cougars finished the match off with a 25-23 set victory and a 3-1 match win.
