Final Stats

MALIBU, Calif. — The Pepperdine women's volleyball squad fell on the road this Saturday afternoon, dropping to Gonzaga, 3-0, in Seattle, Wash. for the Waves sixth West Coast Conference competition. Pepperdine is now 12-7 overall and an even 3-3 in WCC-play.

The Zags (12-7, 3-3 WCC) came out strong in every set, eventually putting the match away with 25-17, 25-16 and 25-20 final decisions. As a team, the Waves amassed 37 kills and a .284 hitting percentage after posting only 12 errors in 88 attempts on the day.

Junior Brooke Honeycutt (Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vista HS) led the Waves with eight kills, and tabbed no errors in 12 attempts for a .533 hitting percentage. Senior Becca Strehlow (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS/UCLA) was next on the offensive with seven kills, a .636 attack success rate, 27 kills, six digs and two blocks.

Freshmen outside hitters Heidi Dyer (San Clemente, Calif./Saddleback Valley Christian HS) and Nikki Lyons (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas HS) and middle blocker Tarah Wylie (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral HS) were also key performers for Pepperdine. Dyer and Lyons posted six kills and Wylie tabbed five. Dyer also put up five digs, one ace and one assist, Lyons was also good for two assists, two digs and one block and Wylie tallied four blocks.

Both teams came out big in the first set trading leads, but with the Waves always just narrowly out of reach. After a 9-8 advantage to the Zags, the home team gained momentum, eventually taking the set 25-17 despite Pepperdine's best efforts.

Gonzaga worked in the second set to establish a sizeable lead over the Waves. Pepperdine made several attempts to close the gap, but the Zags had the edge, closing out the set 25-16 for the 2-0 match advantage.

The Waves refused to give up easily, however, as the team once again traded leads early in the third set. With many tied scores, up to the final 13-13 mark before the home team started pulling away. Pepperdine stayed right behind the opposition, but the Zags pulled out the straight-set victory after finishing set three with a 25-20 final score.

Next, the Waves will continue WCC play with Santa Clara (14-4, 5-1), the current No. 1 in the West Coast Conference standings, at home. The match will take place at 7 p.m. in Malibu on October 15. Find links for live video and live statistics by clicking here: http://gowav.es/WVB2013.
