TIGERVILLE, S.C. - The #1 Pepperdine men's volleyball team concluded the series against North Greenville with another 3-0 sweep on Monday evening inside Hayes Gymnasium. The Waves are now 2-0 as they enter their home-opening series versus George Mason this weekend.
Led by Josh Taylor (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) with a match-high 10 kills, Pepperdine won by set scores of 25-14, 25-16, 25-14. The Waves had previously defeated the Crusaders, a first-year program, 25-11, 25-14, 25-17 on Friday night.
Taylor added a pair of blocks to finish the match with 11.0 points.
Matt West (Seattle, Wash./Shorewood HS) followed Taylor in scoring with 7.5 points. The senior setter made his season debut with three kills off of four swings, three aces and a trio of blocks. West scattered 29 assists while lifting his squad to a .457 (42 kills-10 errors-70 attempts) hitting percentage.
The Malibu Roofing Company once again frustrated NGU attackers, cashing in on 11.5 blocks. Mitchell Penning (Peoria, Ill./Westminster Christian Academy) was credited with six roofs on Monday after charting five during Friday's season opener. The sophomore is averaging 2.20 per set on the young season.
Pepperdine's defense picked up what the Malibu Roofing Company couldn't return, out-digging the opposition 23-14. Brennan Anderson (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona Del Mar HS/Ohio State) collected six digs, followed by Taylor and Scott Rhein (Pleasant View, Tenn./Aaron Academy) with five apiece.
Also earning kills for the Waves were Parker Kalmbach (Coto de Caza, Calif./Tesoro HS) and J.J. Mosolf (Saugus, Calif./Hart HS/Hawaii) with six, Rhein and Nikola Antonijevic (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Stevenson HS) with five, Penning, Matt Tarantino (Van Nuys, Calif./Bishop Alemany) and Colby Harriman (Rochester, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit HS) with two and James Gehrels (Tucson, Ariz./Salpointe Catholic HS) with one.
North Greenville kept things close in the opening points of set one, trailing by just one at 13-14. After Tarantino disposed of a kill, Rhein kept it rolling at the service line. Pepperdine ended the frame on an 11-1 run to put things away, 25-14.
The Waves continued to control the tempo in set two, forcing more Crusader attack errors than kills allowed in route to the 25-16 triumph. Taylor posted six of his 10 kills in the stanza.
With an 8-6 lead in set three, West rotated into the serving position. Mosolf terminated a kill, setting the stage for West to dish back-to-back-to-back aces, including one after a timeout. Pepperdine could not be touched after that and Mosolf ended things at 25-14 with a put away.
The Waves play inside Firestone Fieldhouse for the first time in 2015 with a two-match series against George Mason this weekend. The first match is slated for Friday, January 9 at 7 p.m. The second contest will go off at 5 p.m. on Sunday, January 11.
