STOCKTON, Calif. - The Pepperdine women's volleyball team lost in three sets to Pacific on Saturday afternoon to finish up the opening weekend of West Coast Conference play. Becca Strehlow paced the Waves in the loss with 15 digs, 10 assists and eight kills.
The Tigers, who handed #21-ranked Loyola Marymount its first loss of the season on Thursday evening, won their 10th straight with today's 25-13, 25-13, 25-16 triumph. Pacific is now 13-2 overall and 2-0 in the WCC, while the Waves drop to 6-8 and 1-1 in league play.
Strehlow (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS) turned in a team-best eight kills for Pepperdine while hitting .412 (8 kills-1 error-17 attempts). With her 10 assists and 15 digs, the junior setter also charted her 11th double-double of the season.
Samantha Cash (San Diego, Calif./Canyon Crest Academy) followed up Thursday's 10-block performance against Saint Mary's with four roofs versus Pacific today. She now holds onto fourth place in the Waves' program record book with 380 career blocks. The senior is 13 rejections shy of overtaking third place from Carrie Romer (1993-96, 392 blocks).
The Waves were unable to settle into their offensive rhythm and were hindered by attack errors. Pacific kept their miscues to a minimum and finished the match with a team hitting percentage of .299 (42 kills-10-errors-107 attempts).
Pepperdine must rebound from the loss quickly, as it prepares for a busy three-match week. The Waves first host #11-ranked BYU on Tuesday, Sept. 30 inside Firestone Fieldhouse. The 6 p.m. match will be broadcast nationally on ESPNU, with Pepperdine alum Kevin Barnett calling the action alongside Holly McPeak.
After that, Pepperdine hits to road for matches at Gonzaga (Oct. 2) and Portland (Oct. 4).
