TEMPE, Ariz. - The Pepperdine women's volleyball team went toe-to-toe with two top-25 ranked opponents on the final day of the Residence Inn Invitational. The Waves came up short against both #8 Colorado State and #18 Arizona State, falling 3-0 in both matches.

Pepperdine (5-7) dropped a 25-13, 25-23, 25-20 decision this morning to the Rams (11-1) before suffering a 25-21, 25-21, 25-23 loss to the Sun Devils (10-2) on Saturday night.

Jillian Bergeson (Friendswood, Texas/Friendswood HS) paced the Waves with 3.67 kills per set across the day's two matches. Gaby Palmeri (Davis, Calif./St. Francis HS) followed with a 3.17 average.

Considering the entire weekend, which also included a 3-0 sweep over North Carolina Central, Bergeson averaged 3.67 kills and 2.89 digs. The sophomore was voted to the Residence Inn All-Tournament team for her efforts.

Samantha Cash (San Diego, Calif./Canyon Crest Academy) joined Bergeson on the all-tournament squad after averaging 2.11 kills while hitting .412 (19 kills-5 errors-34 attempts).

Bergeson picked up her seventh double-double of the season after charting 10 kills and 11 digs against CSU. Palmeri led the match with 11 kills.

Although the Waves out-killed Colorado State 40-37, the Rams committed just five attack errors the entire match to control the offensive tempo.

Bergeson reached double figures in kills once again versus Arizona State, and led Pepperdine with 12. Allie Loitz (Bonita, Calif./Bonita Vista HS) came off the bench with 10 kills, while Cash delivered four kills and four blocks.

Becca Strehlow (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson/UCLA) averaged an incredulous 5.67 digs per set in the match for a total of 17. The junior setter finished the weekend with a 7.11 assists average and a digs average of 3.78.

The Sun Devil defense stifled the Waves' offense, making it difficult for Pepperdine's hitters to put the ball away. Although the Blue and Orange swung at a respectable .212 (40-15-118) hitting percentage, ASU trumped that with a .312 (51-12-125) clip.

The Waves begin West Coast Conference play next week and travel to Saint Mary's (Sept. 25) and Pacific (Sept. 27). Pepperdine returns to Firestone Fieldhouse on Tuesday, Sept. 30 to host BYU.
