MALIBU, Calif. - Seniors Katie Messing and Samantha Cash led the offensive charge for the Pepperdine women's volleyball team, but the Waves were unable to claim victory during the season finale. Pepperdine lost to San Diego, 25-21, 25-23, 25-20.

The Waves finish the season with a 12-18 record. They finished seventh in the West Coast Conference with a 7-11 record.

Messing (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands HS) put down 14 kills tonight in her Firestone Fieldhouse finale. In four seasons, the outside hitter has tallied 1,085 kills which ranks 14th in Pepperdine's 40-year history.

Fellow senior Cash (San Diego, Calif./Canyon Crest Academy) has also made her mark on the Waves' program history. With 13 kills this evening, Cash surpassed the 900 career kills milestone. Her career hitting percentage of .324 (903 kills-260 errors-1984 attempts) ranks seventh all-time at Pepperdine.

What the senior will truly be remembered for is her tireless efforts on the defensive front. In four seasons, Cash has charted 447 blocks - including two on Tuesday vs. San Diego, ranking in at third on the all-time list.

Becca Strehlow (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS) handed out 38 assists in the match, but the Toreros' stifling defense drove Pepperdine's hitting percentage to .183 (42-18-131). Overall, USD out-dug the Waves 66-53.

Jillian Bergeson (Friendswood, Texas/Friendswood HS) picked up a match-high 17 digs for Pepperdine while three players - Strehlow, Chanel Brown (Tempe, Ariz./Valley Christian HS/Arizona) and Allie Loitz (Bonita, Calif./Bonita Vista HS) - all earned nine apiece.

San Diego, 19-11 and 12-6 in the league, was led by Alaysia Brown and Canace Finely. Combined, the pair put down 29 kills earned at a sizzling .413 (29-3-63) clip.

The Waves and Toreros exchanged the lead 10 times in the opening frame. Knotted up 20-20, a 4-0 run earned the visiting squad a timely lead and USD was able to close out the stanza 25-21.

The teams continued to battle back-and-forth in set two, exchanging the lead on seven occasions while playing under a tied score 15 times. Unfortunately for Pepperdine, another four unanswered points in the closing plays gave USD the lead at the right time and the Waves would head into the intermission behind 0-2.

San Diego claimed the early advantage in the third, but Pepperdine was able to rally back within one, 19-20. Finely then terminated three kills in the next four points to provide all the separation her team would need and USD closed it out 25-20.

Several of the members of the team, including Cash, Messing and Strehlow, will continue to represent Pepperdine in the spring. The Waves' two-time national championship winning sand volleyball team opens the 2015 season in March.
