MALIBU, Calif. - Despite a team-high 12 kills and four blocks out of senior Samantha Cash, the Pepperdine women's volleyball team was unable to take the victory and lost 3-1 to Pacific. The Tigers kept the Waves in check with a strong defensive showing to win their third straight and remain in second place in the West Coast Conference standings.

After the Waves (11-17, 6-10 WCC) won the first set 25-21, Pacific rallied back to win the next three, 25-18, 25-21, 25-20.

Cash (San Diego, Calif./Canyon Crest Academy) converted 12 of her 29 attacks into kills, and only committed two attack errors to finish the night hitting .345. The middle blocker threw the roof on four times, marking the seventh time in eight matches Cash has charted at least four blocks.

Jillian Bergeson (Friendswood, Texas/Friendswood HS) picked up her team-best 12th double-double of the season with 11 kills and 12 digs.

The Tigers (22-7, 11-5 WCC) were led by Lexi Elman with 21 kills and Katrin Fotterba with 26 digs.

Overall, Pacific out-dug the Waves 70-45, driving Pepperdine's attack percentage down to .205 (48 kills-19 errors-144 attempts). The Tigers, meanwhile, hit at a .328 (61-17-134) clip.

Despite the loss, Allie Loitz (Bonita, Calif./Bonita Vista HS) had a solid outing, depositing four aces while picking up eight digs. Becca Strehlow (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS) handed out a match-best 42 assists.

Although Pacific stormed out of the gates and took an 8-4 lead in the first, Olivia Okoro (Carrollton, Texas/Hebron HS/Tennessee) put down a kill for the sideout and the Waves won seven of the next eight points to go out in front 12-9. The Tigers then went on a run of their own, going back ahead 14-13, but the Waves remained steady. A Cash kill gave Pepperdine the lead once and for all at 16-15, and the home team went on to win 25-21.

Cash paced the floor with six kills, two blocks and an ace.

Pacific once again battled its way to the early lead in set two, but this time the Waves were unable to come up with an answer. Elman took over and sent eight kills to floor, and the Tigers evened the match 1-1 with the 25-18 triumph.

Pepperdine stayed in step with Pacific in the third, but always trailed by a point or two for most of the frame. A Katie Messing (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands HS) put away brought the Waves back within one, 21-22, but the Tigers would not allow another point as they took the 2-1 lead.

Pacific continued to control the tempo in set four, always staying a point or two ahead. The Tigers scored four unanswered points late the stanza to take a 22-16 lead and held on to win 25-20 and clinch the match.

Pepperdine looks to get back in the win column on Saturday, when it hosts Saint Mary's at 1 p.m. Senior Day be celebrated, honoring the careers and contributions of Cash, Messing and Chanel Brown (Tempe, Ariz./Valley Christian HS/Arizona).
