Pepperdine-USC Box Score
LOS ANGELES- Pepperdine baseball took an early 4-1 lead in the fourth inning but was unable to hold off a late rally by host USC, as the Waves fell to the Trojans 5-4 Tuesday at Dedeaux Field in Los Angeles.
After giving up a run in the bottom half of the first and going quietly through three offensive innings, the Waves woke up the bats at the top of the lineup in the fourth, as shortstop Zach Vincej (Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS) led off the fourth with a single up the middle. Catcher Miles Silverstein (Bell Canyon, Calif./Calabasas HS) followed with a single of his own to left field. Second baseman Joe Sever (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine College Prep) followed with another single and advanced to second on a throwing error by the Trojans' shortstop. Vincej scored on the error to tie the game 1-1. First baseman Sam Meyer (Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis HS) followed with a chop single to score Silverstein and put the Waves up 2-1 lead. Right fielder Aaron Brown(Chatsworth, Calif./Chatsworth HS) grounded into a double play on the next at bat, but Meyer scored on the play to push the lead to 3-1.
The Waves started the fifth inning in similar fashion, as third baseman Austin Davidson (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) singled to the shortstop. Center fielder Matt Gelalich(La Verne, Calif./Bonita HS) singled Davidson to scoring position at second. With two on and one out, Vincej reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a throwing error by the Trojans' second baseman. Davidson scored o the error to give the Waves a 4-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth.
The Trojans got to starter Matt Maurer(Medford, Ore./North Medford HS) for three runs in the bottom of the fifth on three hits to tie the game 4-4. Maurer did not factor into the decision, but his final line was 5.0 innings pitched, four earned runs on seven hits with four walks and four strikeouts.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Trojans got to the Waves' bullpen as Eric Karch (Fresno, Calif./Clovis West HS), who had thrown a scoreless sixth inning, gave up a one-out walk before recording the second out and being lifted for lefty Brian McIlhenny(Scottsdale, Ariz./Brophy College Prep). McIlhenny gave up a single through the right side that pushed across the eventual game-winning run, making the score 5-4, Trojans.
After going down 1-2-3 in the eighth inning, the Waves had the potential tying run on first in the top of the ninth with one out but were unable to push it across.
