MALIBU, Calif. - After a solid start in doubles, the Pepperdine women's tennis team was unable to put the dual away in singles and suffered a 5-2 loss to Florida State on Wednesday at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.
The Waves (5-5), ranked #31 in the ITA Collegiate Rankings, stormed out of the gates, quickly earning wins in the top two spots of the doubles lineup.
Ali Walters (Newport Beach, Calif./Creekside Christian HS/UCLA) and Arianna Colffer (Corona, Calif./Buena Vista) disposed of Carlina De los Santos and Francesca Segarelli 8-2, before Khunpak Issara (Bangkok, Thailand/Bangkok Patana School) and Lorraine Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS) clinched the doubles point with an 8-4 triumph over Amy Sargeant and Mia Vriens.
Although Pepperdine had already claimed the point, #68-ranked Florida State avoided the sweep by taking the third match in the tiebreaker.
The Seminoles (6-4) fired back in singles, winning four of the six opening sets. Sargeant put FSU on the board with a win from the six spot, before Issara downed Segarelli in straight sets to put Pepperdine back on top, 2-1.
Unfortunately for the Waves, it would be the only singles victory of the afternoon.
Florida State knotted the score at two when De los Santos edged Walters in three sets.
Colffer bounced back from a loss in the first frame to take set two, 6-2, before Ruth Seaborne took the third set by the same score.
In a must-win situation, Ale Granillo (Pachuca, Mexico/Instituto Hil\dalgo) erased a 2-4 deficit in set three to even the score at four-all before Leyla Erkan won the final two games to clinch the fourth point for the Seminoles.
After a hard fought and evenly contested match, Guillermo suffered defeat after dropping the third-set tiebreaker 7-3.
The Waves return to the court on Monday, March 12 when they travel to local rival UCLA for a 1:30 p.m. match.
