Top Ranked UCLA Too Much for Waves

LOS ANGELES - #1-ranked UCLA proved to be too much for the #31 Pepperdine women's tennis team today, as the undefeated Bruins topped the Waves 7-0.
Although UCLA won the doubles point, Lorraine Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS) and Khunpak Issara (Bangkok, Thailand/Bangkok Patana School) downed #14-ranked Robin Anderson and Skylar Morton, 8-4. It was the Wave pair's first win over a ranked opponent this season.
Guillermo and Issara are the reigning West Coast Conference Doubles Team of the Month after going a team-best 5-2 during the month of February. The pair defeated teams from several talented squads including Cal State Northridge, #1 Florida, #58 UC Irvine, Boise State and #21 Arizona State.
The momentum from doubles carried over into singles, as UCLA (14-0) won all six matches.
Arianna Colffer (Corona, Calif./Buena Vista) took the first set, 6-4, from #107 Skylar Morton before Morton found her rhythm and won set two. Ultimately, Colffer fell 10-7 in the third set tiebreaker.
Issara played in the top spot in the lineup for the first time this season and battled #5-ranked Robin Anderson game-for-game in the first frame. Anderson escaped with the win taking the set 6-4. Issara was unable to rebound from the loss and fell 6-1 in set two.
Guillermo threatened to comeback after dropping the first set to #74 Pamela Montez, but was edged 6-4 in the second stanza.
Pepperdine (5-6) returns home next week Thursday, March 22, when the team opens WCC action versus Loyola Marymount. Doubles play begins at 1:30 p.m.
