LOS ANGELES - The #16-ranked USC women's tennis team proved to be too much for #27 Pepperdine today at Marks Stadium, as the Waves suffered their first loss of the 2012 season. The Trojans opened the dual with strong play in doubles and rode the momentum to a 7-0 sweep in singles.
Pepperdine (2-1) struggled in doubles, dropping all three matches. Lorraine Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS) and Khunpak Issara (Bangkok, Thailand/World Study Centre) claimed four games from the #3-ranked doubles pair of Kaitlyn Christian and Sabrina Santamaria but eventually bowed out 8-4.
The Trojans (5-0) continued their dominance in singles play, winning six of the seven matches in straight sets. Megan Moore (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS) won the first set from the #6-spot in the lineup but Alison Ramos rebounded with wins in the next two frames to tally the win.
Ale Granillo (Pachuca, Mexico/Instituto Hidalgo) fought #19-ranked Zoe Scandalis to the tiebreaker in the opening set, but was edged 7-5. Granillo was unable to recover from the loss, and fell 6-1 in set two.
The challenges continue for the Waves, as they play #1 Florida and #2 Stanford next week Friday (Feb. 10) and Saturday (Feb. 11) in Palo Alto, Calif.
