MALIBU, Calif. - The #30 Pepperdine women's tennis team got its two-match weekend off to a strong start, shutting out Boise State 7-0. The Waves won all nine matches to improve to 4-3 on the season.
The top doubles team of Lorraine Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS) and Khunpak Issara (Bangkok, Thailand/Bangkok Patana School) broke serve twice in the opening games to take a quick 4-0 lead. Although Marlena and Manuela Pietzuch were able to avoid the shutout, the Wave tandem put the match away 8-1.
Action on courts two and three played out much closer. Ale Granillo (Pachuca, Mexico/Instituto Hidlago) and Megan Moore (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS) climbed out of a 0-3 hole to win the match 8-4 and secure the doubles point.
Also fighting from behind was newly paired Ali Walters (Newport Beach, Calif./Creekside Christian HS/UCLA) and Arianna Colffer (Corona, Calif./Buena Vista), who gave Pepperdine the sweep with an 8-6 victory from the #2 spot in the lineup.
The Pepperdine domination continued in singles, as the Waves won all six matches in straight sets. Moore got things started with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph over Fiona Mok.
Issara downed Sonia Klamczynska, 6-1, 6-3, before Granillo muscled her way to a 6-0, 6-2 win on court one.
Guillermo edged Sandy Vo 6-4 in the opening set before finding her stride and winning the second frame 6-0.
The Waves continued to dominate, as Walters topped Morgan Basi, 6-1, 6-3.
Manuela Pietzuch rebounded from a 6-1 loss in the opening frame to take a 6-5 lead in the second set over Colffer before the junior took a game to force a tiebreaker. After losing the first point, Colffer fired off seven-straight points to clinch the match and the Pepperdine sweep.
Pepperdine continues this weekend's action at home with a 12 p.m. dual versus #21 Arizona State on Sunday, Feb. 26.
