PALO ALTO, Calif. - Maurice Torres had 19 kills and Chase Ross and Cory Riecks both added 11, but it was not enough as No. 3 Stanford topped No. 13 Pepperdine in four sets on Saturday night inside Maples Pavilion.
The Cardinal (17-7, 13-6 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) won the first set 25-15, before the Waves (9-13, 5-13) evened the score with a 28-26 win in the second frame. Stanford won the third and fourth sets by scores of 25-23 and 25-20, respectively.
For the second night in a row, Torres (Riverside, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS) paced Pepperdine on the attack, following up last night's 26 kill performance in the win over Pacific with 19 this evening.
In addition to his 11 put aways, Ross (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad HS) added eight digs and a pair of blocks. Riecks' (Auburn, Calif./Placer HS) 11 kills were accompanied by three digs and five blocks.
Matt Pollock (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg HS) finished this week with a 2.0 blocks/set average after totaling nine blocks this evening.
Mike McMahon (Mission Viejo, Calif./Santa Margarita HS) protected the backcourt with 14 digs, marking the second night in a row the freshman eclipsed double digits in the category.
The Waves matched the Cardinal with 58 total kills, but the home team held the slight advantage with a .305 hitting percentage compared to Pepperdine's .216 clip.
Brad Lawson was Stanford's top performer with 19 kills and 10 digs.
Next up, the Waves host BYU for a home-and-home series on April 8 and 9.
